Cool Apps: ExpenseBay.com Puts Expense Management In Gear

Do you have “The Shoebox”? Or, at least, something similar. A box, a drawer, a really big, old boot in which you stuff each and every receipt, note about business expenses and all manner of other scraps of paper designed to send your accountant into cardiac arrest.

Normally, Cool Apps gives you information about some great new tech tool that you can use to generate new business. Today, we’re going to talk about something that will help you manage current business, so that you can spend more time working with and paying attention to your clients.

 Hence, ExpenseBay.com.

ExpenseBay is an entirely new kind of expense management system. What makes it so different? Well, for starters, it couldn’t be easier. Simply sign up, and enter the credit cards that you use for business transactions. ExpenseBay will download all of your transactions, categorize them, and place them in the right expense reports. (How does it know?)

 But wait … there’s more!

About that shoebox full of receipts. With ExpenseBay, that box’s time is done. You can scan your receipts and email the images to your ExpenseBay account. The system will sort them and make sure they are categorized properly. Even cooler, if you have an iPhone (yeah, there’s an app for that), simply take a snapshot of your receipt and the image will be entered into your weekly expense report. Enter cash transactions with just a few clicks. Add notes, so you don’t forget important details. Oh, and it’s free.

You’re a busy agent. You have clients to take care of, your own business to nurture. Managing expenses shouldn’t give you palpitations or have you looking to hide your head in the sand. You don’t have time for stress like that. ExpenseBay will make it easy to get it all in gear, and your accountant will thank you for it.

And you can use that shoebox for shoes.

Monday Morning Mojo: Finding your purpose in life may drive you to the success you’ve always been looking for

They get up early everyday (actually the middle of the night by my standards) to exercise their mind, body and soul.  Then they work all day with passion, drive, discipline and an attitude which is absolutely off the charts.

I just can’t figure it out.

How do they stay motivated and always seem to be having fun?  How do they stay so disciplined? How do they keep such a positive attitude and a smile on their face when they work so hard in what always appears to be stressful situations? It seems like it would be exhausting to be such a Radical Fanatical. Their constant motivation and success is just incredible. I wish I was as motivated as them, and then I could have what they have.

Heads up – it’s not motivation driving them, IT’S INSPIRATION.

When we are in inspired action and not motivated action, it is effortless. Trying to be motivated all of the time is exhausting and impossible to maintain. If we’re not inspired all the motivation in the world will not get us to be like those fired up Radical Fanaticals. You have to be inspired to do what most people aren’t willing to do. It’s one thing to be motivated to do something for a day, week, month or even a year, but it is something completely different to be inspired to do something for a life time. You have to be inspired about your life, your family, your job, your health, and you have to be INSPIRED about you!

So, the million dollar question is – how do I get that inspired?

First you have to figure out your purpose in life.  You have to figure out why in the world are we here on this earth, it’s not by accident. Unfortunately most people just go through the motions, the normal grind of life and they never find their purpose.

Here are a few examples of those that found inspiration in their life, and in turn found their purpose:

  • Mother Teresa
  • Martin Luther King
  • Bill and Melinda Gates (The Gates Foundation) - it’s not about Microsoft
  • The Pope
  • The Dalai Lama
  • Gandhi
  • Tiger Woods (The Tiger Woods Foundation) – it’s not about golf
  • Deepak Chopra
  • Lance Armstrong (The LiveStrong Foundation) - it’s not about the Tour de France
  • The President of the United States - whether you like him or not

So, find your purpose.

To help in your process I recommend reading Rick Warren’s – The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I here for? It’s a powerful book.

Make it a purpose driven day, week, month, year. Make it a purpose driven and inspiring LIFE.

Find your purpose and get inspired!

Respecting the Nature of Nature

About a week and a half ago,  I was happily riding my bike up in Tahoe and while going down one of the easiest trails I’ve been on I went from chatting with my girlfriend to flipping through the air, landing on my knees and face and having my bike flip over me.  I don’t know why I fell and I really don’t remember how I hurt myself so badly, but I am bruised all over.

Of course I have run through the mindset of how lucky I am that nothing was broken and how much worse so many others have it.  I am thankful that in time, I will be up and “running”, and of course I am grateful that I still am excited to ride!

What I have spent a lot of time thinking about is WHY I fell.  I lost my focus.  I was thinking about what I was going to do later in the day and talking with my friend.  I lost respect for the nature of nature and the intensity of the sport I was practicing.

When we (I) go for a ride, workout, hike, water ski, river rafting, or anything we do during the summer, it’s important to think about the conditions of the trail, water, and terrain.  We need to focus on the way our body is moving, where there might be boulders and rocks, if there are other people around who might get in our path, etc.

Take great respect for nature and for the bodies we have worked hard to keep healthy.  Take a pause to focus on what you are doing and how you are doing it and keep your eye on the event!

As another “nugget” from this experience, I realize that although I don’t remember how I fell, I realize (based on where my bruises are) that I basically hit almost every body part!  What’s cool is although I have bruising, I realize I must’ve been pretty darn flexible to survive without anything broken!  Now I am ever so grateful for all those yoga classes and core workouts!  I’m sure they saved me weeks of recovery!!

Monday Morning Mojo: It Sucks To Be Normal

Are you an average Joe or average Jane?  I sure hope not, because average or “normal” in America today sucks!

Here are just a few things that are considered normal in America today -

  • The average American household carries nearly $11,000 in credit card debt. That sucks.
  • 63% of Americans are over weight and over 31% of Americans (nearly 90,000,000 people) are obese (that has tripled in the last 20 years.)  Nearly half a million people die each year from obesity related illnesses. That sucks!!! Want to find out where you are at? Use this BMI Calculator (Body Mass Index). If your number is not what you like, don’t start making excuses such as “it can’t be right”, “I have big bones”, “it’s my genes”, “it does not apply to my body type” or any other crap you will brainwash yourself with to make you think it is okay.  Even though it is normal, it is not okay.
  • Over 43% of marriages end in divorce (they say that percentage is climbing and may be as high as 50% today). I think a big part of the reason the divorce rate is so high is because we are “normal” at everything else in our life and normal sucks?   So, because our life is normal, it leads to our marriage being normal and we know what normal is – right?  It sucks.
  • There are 49 counties in the world where the people have a longer average life expectancy than Americans. We live in America the greatest country in the world and we are number 50?!? Some say our children’s average life expectancy may be the first in history that will be less than their parents.  That sucks. Why?  Because our children are watching us and doing what we are doing.
  • Over 55% of people in America suffer from high blood pressure and over 300,000 people each year die from it.  That sucks.

Unfortunately because the majority of people in America are ‘normal’ (or average) it has become our measuring-stick to measure our lives by. What we measure ourselves against “sucks” so compared to the masses we look fine. However, for people whose life is “normal” or average, guess what?  Their life is not all that great, but they just don’t know it.  If someone is normal they are probably one or more of these – overweight, broke, addicted, divorced, depressed, unhappy, stressed out and God only knows what else.  It is all they know, so they don’t know what it could be like.  Now don’t get all bummed out if you are thinking I am normal.  The great part is we can do something about it.

It all starts with the first step – start spending more time with people who aren’t normal or average. Think about it, if all of the people you are spending your time with are like you, do you think you are going to change?  NOT. On the other hand, do you think if you hang out with people who are achieving more than the average, you might learn by their examples and achieve more than the average? You bet.

So, why isn’t this a natural behavior? Because when we spend time with people achieving more than us, it makes us uncomfortable and it exposes us. This forces us to acknowledge our weaknesses and forces us to improve and improving requires us to get uncomfortable and change.   You see, we want to spend time with people that make us feel comfortable, feel good about our life that is what is natural and easy.  When we spend time with people like us it makes it all okay that we are the way we are that we are a “Normal Joe” or a “Normal Jane”.

Something to remember – we will very rarely achieve 10% above or 10% below the average of our five best friends. The five people we spend the majority of our time with in all areas of our life.  So be careful who you are spending YOUR time with.  Don’t get too comfortable, because comfortable is typically “normal,” and “normal” sucks!

Don’t be “normal,” be exceptional and have a kick ass life!

Overcome Your Negative ‘Self-Talk’

Twice in the last week I have heard the same variation of how to feel good about ourselves.  You see, so often it is easy for our “self talk” to negate the good things we do.    We get a compliment about something we did and we immediately think “yes, but, I wish I could’ve finished it sooner…” or we lose a pound and think “I still need to lose 10 more“… or we run a mile and think “I need to go faster and farther“…

So a practice which was suggested to me was every time we hear a small negative voice pop in our head, immediately we offer 3 positive affirmations about something which is positive and good about ourselves.  What will eventually happen is the positive affirmations will overcome the negative talk and in time, we will be over come with only thinking uplifting and productive thoughts!

Try this! You might find yourself coming up with affirmations every 10 minutes, but you will be amazed and the way you will feel at the end of your day.

Monday Morning Mojo: Life is like a roll of toilet paper

Where does the time go?

Two weeks ago I was in Tahoe on vacation with my wife, Lynn, and my two amazing boys Tommy (12) and Nick (10).

As I sat next to my wife on the beach and watched my two boys playing in the lake it was frightening to think about how fast the last 12 years flew by.  How in the world did this happen? How did I get to be 45, how did it become 27 years since I graduated high school, how have I been married for 18 years and how in the world did my boys get to be 12 and 10? All of you with kids totally get this.

We’ve all heard our parents say “Enjoy life it goes by so fast,” and “Those were some of the most memorable times in our lives.”

It’s said to us again and again all through our lives – we hear it from our parents and/or grandparents. They have lived and learned and do all they can to make sure we slow down long enough to appreciate the moment. They say “quit living for tomorrow, appreciate what you have today.” They know how awesome life is and they now realize themselves the key is to savor it.

Unfortunately for so many of us, we are too preoccupied with the opportunities of tomorrow to slow down and appreciate the gift of today.

Why is it, more times than not, that we reflect back on the past and realize they were right?

Imagine if you could go back and do it again, how much more would you appreciate the moment a second time around, knowing what you know today?

Remember today is yesterday’s tomorrow, and it was what you were looking forward to last week, last month, and last year. Be fired up about today, and make today count because tomorrow will come soon enough. Savor the moment, and be thankful for what you have TODAY - your life, your health, and the ones you love.

As the saying goes - life is like a roll of toilet paper – the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.

Monday Morning Mojo: Amy’s Inspiration

It was 3 years yesterday that my cousin Amy passed away from breast cancer at the age of 41.  In the final year of her life she received Monday Morning MOJO every week and loved it.  We shared thoughts back and forth via e-mail many times after I would send it.  This is the MOJO I wrote after she passed away on my flight back home from her memorial service.  I have made a commitment to send this out as a Monday Morning MOJO every year at this time as a tribute to Amy and her life.  I think there are great thoughts in this MOJO that one can never hear too often.

I walked into my home on Saturday night from one of the most emotionally draining experiences of my life.

Attending and presenting a reading at the funeral of my 41 year-old cousin, Amy.

Amy was beautiful, healthy and living the American dream. She had a story book marriage and two beautiful daughters (12 and 14) when tragedy struck sixteen months ago.

In the words of her daughter, “It was a clear blue spring day – well, at least it was outside, because inside it was raining. We felt sadness and disbelief from the bad news. Not just regular bad news – but the kind where your life seems to fall apart in just two simple minutes. We listened closely to mother as she whispered, ‘Its cancer,’ and immediately feelings of shock, anger, and fear rushed through us all.”

Under her tears her daughter said faintly “Just never lose faith. Nobody knows what it’s like until it happens to them. And when it’s YOUR Mom how you view the world begins to change. You look at the mountains and now see their magnificence, just as seeing my Mom smile became everything to me. I started to appreciate life so much more. During those final months we would spend time gazing at the night sky, and I treasure everyday what she would say, ‘I love you more than all of the stars in the sky.’ Looking back at how it used to be, and how it would have been, and how it’s going to be without her by my side – truly it will never be the same.”

Her words I repeated over and over in my mind. It felt as though someone had shook me – forcing my eyes open to see the world for what it really it was. Forcing me to take a hard look at the ultimate truth, the truth that has the power to wake us up and make us live before it’s too late.

“Amy is gone,” the truth told me quietly, “and someday you will be, and so will all the people you love – it’s just a matter of time.”

So I ask you – are you doing what you want to do right now with your life, or are you putting off living your hopes and dreams because you think there will always be a tomorrow? If my cousin were here she’d tell you differently, she’d say “there will come a time when tomorrow doesn’t come, and you are wasting your time if you are not loving and laughing and enjoying your days now, while you can.”

This leaves us with a choice – we can delete this message because we find it too depressing, or we can let this message be a force that pushes us over the tipping point into the life we dream of. That is most often what it takes, something so strong it carries us past our fears and doubts and the terrors that come when we think about finally doing the things we’ve been dreaming about for so long.

Let Amy be your inspiration this morning. And realize she had a great life, doing the things she loved, with the people she loved – and she would want you to do the same.

I’ve heard it all; it’s just not possible, I’ve got obligations, responsibilities, and don’t forget the economy, and of course the – I can’t just DO what I want – I’ve got a job, bills, yada yada yada…

All those excuses mean nothing when your time comes, and who knows when that might be. All I know is the days are passing quickly and now is the time to do what YOU KNOW you need to do. Don’t put if off, or you may just be too late.

We will miss you Amy.

Monday Morning Mojo: Accountability Drives Us to Reach Our Goals

Money, work, health, your weight, your life – everything expands to meet the resources available.  Have you ever noticed how that works?  It’s easy to give you examples, because it happens to all of us every day:

It is April 15th tax day, how is it that we get our taxes done and delivered to the Post Office that evening just before they close?  Was there no time available in the three and a half months prior?  It’s all because we have a deadline.

Have you ever noticed that so many of us diet, lose weight, and eventually gain the weight back?  Next time you lose weight try cleaning out your closet, purging all the clothes that are too big, giving you no easy way to expand back into them.  Removing the easy option makes it hard to go back to your old ways, and gives you a defined line in which to not cross.

Why is it no matter how much money we make it never seems to be enough?  Our expenses are expanding to meet our incomes.  Watch out for this situation, it’s a dangerous place to be.

Isn’t the final two minutes of a football game the most exciting? Often teams that struggled to make a touchdown the entire game come through to score during the final moments?  They have a deadline that defines the game, they either will win or lose – they have no options.

No matter where we are in life, we always feel like we don’t have enough time – in high school, then in college, as we start our career, after we get married, and especially after we have kids.  Not only are we able to accomplish more and more during each stage in life, but when we reflect back, we wonder what we did with all the free time we had in the previous stage of our life. The time you take to accomplish anything in life will expand or reduce to meet the amount of time you give it.

The lesson is, with deadlines we are forced into action. There is no more time for procrastination and you just do it because you have to. Somehow we all need to figure out a way to create our own self imposed deadlines, getting us ahead early in the game as opposed to the last two minutes. What has worked for me is to create mini deadlines on my goals and then share those deadlines with someone I know will hold me to them. This is accountability. Granted, it adds uncomfortable pressure to our lives. Yet the reality is, if you want to have freedom and success you need to have accountability and discipline. They go hand in hand.

Make it a GREAT week.
