Monday Morning Mojo: The Power of a Smile

I saw this study which was detailed in the journal of Motivation and Emotion.  I thought it was worth sharing for a mojo, it’s pretty interesting.  It is titled “If you want to know whether your marriage will survive, look at your spouse’s yearbook photos”.  I am sure photographs not only can help predict whether your marriage will be successful, but can help predict whether we will be successful in many other areas of our lives. Just remember it is never too late to start smiling.

Psychologists have found that how much people smile in old photographs can predict their later success in marriage.

In one test, the researchers looked at people’s college yearbook photos, and rated their smile intensity from 1 to 10. None of the people who fell within the top 10 percent of smile strength had divorced, while within the bottom 10 percent of smilers, almost one in four had had a marriage that ended, the researchers say. (Scoring was based on the stretch in two muscles: one that pulls up on the mouth, and one that creates wrinkles around the eyes.)

In a second trial, the research team asked people over age 65 to provide photos from their childhood (the average age in the pictures was 10 years old). The researchers scored each person’s smile, and found that only 11 percent of the biggest smilers had been divorced, while 31 percent of the frowners had experienced a broken marriage.

Overall, the results indicate that people who frown in photos are five times more likely to get a divorce than people who smile.

While the connection is striking, the researchers stress that they can’t conclude anything about the cause of the correlation.

“Maybe smiling represents a positive disposition towards life,” said study leader Matthew Hertenstein, a psychologist at DePauw University in Indiana. “Or maybe smiling people attract other happier people, and the combination may lead to a greater likelihood of a long-lasting marriage. We don’t really know for sure what’s causing it.”

Hertenstein said he has considered other explanations, such as the possibility that people who smile more often tend to attract more friends, and a larger support network makes it easier to keep a marriage healthy.

The results of the study fit into a larger pattern of research that has found many personality characteristics can be determined from very thin slices of behavior. Basically, we often reveal ourselves in the most subtle, simple ways.

And smiling in photographs has been shown to be correlated with a number of traits, including a generally happier disposition.

“I think [our results] go along with a lot of the literature that’s been coming out over the last five to 10 years, which shows that positive emotionality is incredibly important in our lives,” Hertenstein told LiveScience. “There are many, many beneficial outcomes to a positive disposition.”

The findings are also notable because they found a connection between photos taken when people were young and marriage outcomes that sometimes occurred much later.

“It feeds into this idea that what’s occurring earlier in our lives in terms of our present situation and our mental state can predict things that occur decades later,” Hertenstein said. “Showing the continuity in who we are is really important.”

The good news is it is never too late.  Start smiling today.

Make it a powerful week!

What would you do for one million dollars?

If you were paid $1 million to put on 100 pounds, would you do it?

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been curious about this question and have asked about a dozen people of all walks of fitness and health what their answer would be.

What I have found interesting, is those who are fit, and/or who have fought hard to get in shape immediately said no to this question – without a moment of hesitation.

Those who weren’t in shape and hadn’t made their fitness a priority – but of course wished they were in better shape – said yes. Without delay each person continued to say how they would spend part of the money hiring the right people to help them lose the weight. Although, they don’t do it now.

I found it fascinating that the decision was so split down the middle.

Those who said no realized the value of balance and health and what this dangerous act would do to their bodies. It’s not simply a matter of putting on weight then losing weight. It’s a matter of what happens to the inside of our bodies when we stress it out. There is a potential to develop diabetes, high cholesterol, oxidation and a plethora of other ailments.

It also deteriorates our momentum, our self-love and our mental attitude.

One of my trainers expressed that he works with so many people, day-in and day-out, who treasure their fitness gains. Each get exhilarated when they’re able to bench mark what they have accomplished – he couldn’t imagine how difficult it would be to reverse this momentum.

I’m sharing with you, the day before Thanksgiving, the day before one of the biggest eating days of the year – to consider how important your health is to you, and what you are willing to do in order to keep your body and mind young and in amazing shape.

Enjoy the Spirit of the Day!

Monday Morning Mojo: Challenge+Crisis+Pain =OPPORTUNITY

Why does life throw challenges and crisis at us, like the crisis we have all been dealing with for the last year?

Because that is the only way we will change. It is the only way we will rid ourselves of evil, bad habits, greed, ego and the wrong priorities.  It’s human nature wanting to stay the course, not to rock the boat, and usually the only way we will change is if we are forced into it by some outside influence, i.e. financial crisis, death, illness, catastrophe.  We have to look at the challenges of this last year as an opportunity and as a way to re-prioritize what is important.

What has happened with most people this last year is they are focused, no they are consumed, by what has been taken away and not focused on being thankful for what they have and the opportunities of tomorrow.  Step back for a moment – the reason things get taken away, the reason life throws us challenges and crisis is because it is the only way we will wake up and quit overlooking those things which are really most important in life – our family, our friends, our health, our spirituality, balance, etc.  Challenge and crisis gets thrown at us because it is the only thing that will slap us in the face hard enough to get our attention. Think back in your life to a time of crisis – yes you may have lost something or someone. There may have been a scare in your life of some kind, and with that crisis a door opened. A new person appeared when you looked in the mirror, usually a better person, a more thankful person, a more humble person, a more caring person, and a person with better priorities.

In every crisis and in every challenge there is an opportunity. We just have to find it.  But, until we let go of the pain and anger of what we have lost, and focus on all that we have which is really most important, the agony will not stop.  And, once we do focus on what we have, life will be even better than it was before. This week and beyond, make a commitment EVERYDAY to give thanks and be grateful for everything and everyone you have in your life. Quit being consumed by what you have lost, or the pain will not stop and you will not be able to move forward towards accomplishing greatness.  If you can do this, not only will the pain stop, but life will be better and you will be more at peace than ever before.

Remember, life is about who we become and how we grow when faced with challenge, with crisis, and with pain.  It is what life is all about. It is why we are here.  So step back and look in the mirror, who are you becoming?

This week is Thanksgiving – be thankful and be grateful for all we have in our lives.  The rest is just “stuff”.

Discover Your Passion

What if I told you that you could do virtually anything you put your mind to? Even if you didn’t necessarily know that it was something you thought you wanted to do? What if I told you not only would you achieve it, but you’d exceed your goals and discover a passion for this new thing that you didn’t know existed within you? Oh, and you’d also lose over 25 pounds and 5% body fat in pursuit of this newfound passion, too. And all you had to do was suit up, show up, do the work and let the magic happen? Sounds impossible?

Recently, I got to witness a few of my clients complete a half century (50 mile) bike ride in Solvang. When they started “training” for this event, they were doing it because (quite honestly) their husbands were doing it and wanted their wives to do it, too. Begrudgingly, the girls started training, and signed up for the 25-mile event (while the guys were signed up for a metric century, or 62.5 miles.) But somewhere along the way, with more than a few thousand pedal strokes in between, the magic happened for them.

I was fortunate to watch as the passion unfolded for them. They started strength training, they began a nutrition program, and started riding their new bikes. Shifting? Nerve wracking for them. The saddle?? Ridiculously uncomfortable. And don’t even THINK about using anything other than their tennis shoes to ride with…

Slowly but surely, as they gained confidence and we went on ride after ride with one another, they began to flourish. They got new cycling gear. They learned how to shift. And they even used “clipless” pedals (which if you’re a cyclist you KNOW what a big deal this is!) With each pedal stroke, they came closer to realizing their goal of now a 50-mile ride. Inconceivable! And it no longer mattered that their husbands “wanted” them to do it–they now wanted to do it for themselves, because they truly loved cycling.

The big day arrived, and they had done their homework. No cramming necessary. Even though the day was tough at times, and glorious, too THEY DID IT!!! They completed the 50-mile ride. And without exception, every one of them said that never in their wildest dreams did they think they could do it and LOVE it so much. I couldn’t have been more proud and excited. The best part? They’ve already signed up for the next one…regardless of whether or not their husbands do it!

Discover your passion. Be willing to take risks and KNOW that you can indeed do virtually ANYTHING that you put your mind to.

This was written by one of Body Firm’s amazing trainers, Stacia Carney, who was able to witness this metamorphis over the last several months!

Being late – a life killer

It’s the key of success or the handcuffs of defeat.  The question is, do you have the key or are you in the cuffs?

“My life is 30 minutes late…not my watch, but my life!!!!!”  You know who I am talking about.  You end up telling them everything starts 30 minutes earlier than it actually does, in hopes they may be on time, but their still late!!!!!  And they wonder why their life always seems to be totally out of control…why they are always stressed out.  And the excuses are always the same…I just have to much on my plate…I just can’t get it all done…I just couldn’t get out of the meeting…I just couldn’t get them off the phone…I just…I just…I just… They are always blaming someone or something for them not taking control…for their poor time management. The other brutal thing about not having good time management is you never have time to do those things you want to do…those things important to you. You are always saying I will do it tomorrow, because all of your time is spinning out of control just trying to keep up.  Unfortunately for those, the tomorrow they are waiting for never comes.

The single most valuable thing in a person’s life is time.  And when we keep people waiting and/or don’t show up when we say we are going to show up, we are telling those we care about, those we are trying to do business with and those we want to gain respect from, we don’t care about their most valuable asset, because ours is more important.  It’s a success killer…it’s a happiness killer…it’s a relationship killer…it’s a life killer!

Here is the reality of it.  If we could stop time for 24 hours, except for them so they could catch up, and then started the clock ticking again, they would still be late.  It’s not a time issue it’s a planning issue…lets face it, it’s a personal issue…its just pain and simply a bad habit.  Heck, they are going to be late to their own funeral when the time comes.

If you are one of those we are talking about here, all hope is not lost.  Here is a great thing to try and institute in your life and business today.  Make a commitment to show up 5 to 10 minutes early to everything you do. I have every clock in my life set 10 minute early…from the clock next to my bed, to my watch, to the clock in my car…everything I can change to 10 minutes early I do.  I am not going to say I am never late, because that would be a lie.  But I can tell you, those who know me will say I am very punctual and respectful of everyone’s time…including my own.  Certainly being late is the exception for me, not the rule.

You can never change a first impression…and our first impression is when we show up…early, on time or late.  What is your first impression?

Make it a great week!

The Eightfold Path

Lately, I have been introduced through a series of “lessons” to a Buddhist belief system called The Eightfold Path.  In very very lament terms,

 The Eightfold Path is:

1.    Right View
2.    Right Intention
3.    Right Speech
4.    Right Action
5.    Right Livelihood
6.    Right Effort
7.    Right Mindfulness
8.    Right Concentration

The Path is divided into three main sections: wisdom, ethical conduct and mental discipline.

Wisdom: Right View and Right Intention are the wisdom path. Right View is not about believing in doctrine, but in perceiving the true nature of ourselves and the world around us. Right Intention refers to the energy and commitment one needs to be fully engaged in Buddhist practice.

Ethical Conduct: Right Speech, Right Action and Right Livelihood are the ethical conduct path. This calls us to take care in our speech, our actions, and our daily lives to do no harm to others and to cultivate wholesomeness in ourselves.

Mental Discipline: Through Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration we develop the mental discipline to cut through delusion. Many schools of Buddhism encourage seekers to meditate to achieve clarity and focus of mind.

In my most recent “lesson”, I learned about #5, “Right Livelihood”.  This can mean anything from “Are you working in the right type of job” to “are you being good to your body in order to live a healthy life” and everything in between.

Since the theme of most of my writing revolved around healthy living, I made strong connection to “Right livelihood”.  Wouldn’t it be a dream if we could wake every day loving what we do for a living, loving our life and loving how we treat our bodies?

I know I will be thinking about “Right Livelihood” this whole week; looking for areas of pure joy, acceptance and of ways to treat myself with kindness, love and respect.  I will choose to exercise in a manner which will help me live a life of vitality and eat nutritious food to allow me to feel even better than I already do!  I hope something in the Eightfold path can inspire you as well this week!

Change or Die?!

What if a well-informed, trusted authority figure said you had to make difficult and enduring changes in the way you think and act?

If you didn’t make those changes, you would die soon. A lot sooner than you had to.

Could you change when change really mattered?

Yes, you say? Try again. Most likely you wouldn’t change.

Don’t believe me? Let me share with you the odds – 9 to 1. That’s 9 to 1 against you.

Do you realize a SMALL percent of the population consumes the VAST majority of the health care budget for diseases that are very well known, and by in large behavioral?  We are sick because of how we choose to live our lives, not because of any environmental or genetic factors beyond our control.  They say it could be as much as 80% of our health care budget is consumed by these behavioral issues – smoking, eating, drinking, stress and lack of exercise.

Could behaviors be driving issues in more than one area of our lives? Could we ultimately be in control of the aspects we felt were a product of conditions outside our control?

Do you want some more proof of the challenge we all face in change?

There was a study done back in 1995 of people who went through bypass surgery (open heart surgery).  Of those studied, within 2 years from surgery 90% went right back to their old unhealthy lifestyle. So, if the fear of DEATH doesn’t initiate change – is there any hope?  More importantly how do we get our stubborn brain to stop resisting change so tenaciously. Why do we fight it even when we KNOW if we don’t it will kill us?

Well, knowing that motivating people with the fear of death wasn’t the right approach because 90% went right back to where they were before, the study tried a different approach. They decided to changed the patients focus. Have any idea to what? The joy of LIVING.

The study took 300 patients and put a 100% daily effort into focusing their minds on all the daily things that make life great. They coached them on their mindset, their attitude, their daily habits, and surrounded them continually with the RIGHT influences. It was this change of focus – taking it away the fear of death and into the joy of living – that allowed 77% of the patients to sustain the lifestyle changes.

What changes do we need to make?  Where is our focus – in fear or in joy?

Its time to make some changes now!

Download and read Alan Deutschman’s complete Change or Die article, my inspiration for today’s Mojo. It’s an eye opener – definitely worth taking the time to read.

Make is a GREAT week and a GREAT life!
