Want to check out the best-of-the-best in the world of Thoughts on Leadership during 2011? The following list is the top five blogs viewed and commented on in 2011. Each helps people find not only the best leadership advice being put out today, but also gives you the tools and confidence to help bring out the leader in you.

  1. Take your MEDS and become an effective leader

Recent brain research shows that M-E-D-S – meditation, exercise, diet and sleep – can actually improve performance. “MEDS” aren’t just actions you perform occasionally, but part of your daily life. Take time to slow down and you’ll find that this peaceful state of mind contributes to more effective leadership.

  2. Impact and goals on the road to success

As a leader, you’re always making an impact as other people observe you, listen to what you’re saying and make judgments about your decisions and style. But are you making the right impact? Your team members are your most valuable asset and to maximize that asset every leader needs to make a positive impact and be a role model for others.

  3. How to turn failure into success

Failure. We all experience it. Most of us see failure as a negative thing, which makes sense; it doesn’t feel good to fail. We all want to succeed and failure feels like a setback to that goal. What we don’t realize is that failure presents an opportunity to learn, grow and succeed. True leaders do not fear failure; they know how to use failure to their advantage.

  4. What’s the most critical quality of today’s leader? Creativity

If you’ve ever thought that creativity wasn’t necessary in the realm of leadership, think again. Creativity is critical to leadership success. If you want to become a more confident and successful leader and improve your leadership skills and results, including your creativity, now is the time to take advantage.

  5. Teaching others how to accept change

“Who Moved My Cheese?” is a rare book that can be read and understood quickly by everyone who wants to succeed in changing times. Resistance to change is a dead-end street. Don’t depend upon the status quo. Realize change happens and circumstances, which may have favored you in the past, will change in the future. Accept that you can’t control change and are not entitled to things remaining the same.

If you embrace the principal, that each of you can be a leader, you will find within yourself a greater desire to succeed and to perform at a higher level because you represent something larger than yourself. My hope is that each of you has your most successful year ever in 2012. Strive to make it so and recognize yourself as a leader among leaders.

Happy New Year and see you at the top!

Wednesday Wellness: Cherish Your Life

We are ending the year of 2011; some view this as the hardest year of their life, others the absolute best. I know amazing people on both ends of this spectrum.

Traditionally we (as a culture) look to the New Year and set our resolutions of what we want to accomplish in the future along with what we want to let go of from our past.

Now, I am all about goal setting, it gives us direction, a structure and a purpose. To understand where we want to go, how we want to get there and why, we often need to look behind us as well so we can evaluate what to repeat, or conversely what not to replicate.

There’s an obvious problem here though, too often we are so busy looking in the rear view mirror so we can look to the future, we forget all about where we are right now!

Right now…this very moment…what do you have in your life that you cherish? When you look in the mirror, who are you? What do you see in yourself that you respect, admire, love and want to continue to have, to do?

In this moment, how is your health, your heart, your activity level, your clarity and your energy? What do you do every day to take care of yourself that you appreciate and can continue to have in your regiment?

As you read this, who in your life do you love and who loves you? Why do you love them and they you, how can you always hold that dear?

Take some time before the New Year’s festivities and take stock in all you have in your life that you love. Not just what you have materialistically, but what you have that is inside of you and makes you all you are.

Thank yourself for taking care of you, your family, your friends, your clients and bring all that wonderful YOU, into the New Year!

To yours in health in 2011, 2012 and always!

Monday Mojo: Top five Mojos of 2011

As we say goodbye to 2011 and look forward to the awesome possibilities of 2012, let’s not forget that sometimes what motivates and inspires us are the everyday acts and simple things that anyone can do to make this world and ourselves better. With this in mind we compiled a list of the most popular and inspirational Mojo’s of 2011.

  1. The tiny black dot
If you’ve been staring at some tiny black dots recently, take responsibility for that. And recognize that nobody is forcing you to keep your eyes on the black dot. You have a choice. You can keep staring at the black dot and telling others about all the things that are wrong in your life, or you can begin to appreciate your many blessings. Sounds like a pretty easy choice to make, doesn’t it?

  2. Be 110% committed
Most people just want to dip their toes in the water with things in life when what we really need to do is dive in! You see it every day – people showing up but not going full out. It will be the difference between winning and losing. The good thing is most people go through life only playing half speed. So if you go 110% you will not only score, but you will CRUSH IT and win!!

  3. Success has to be an obsession
Success…how bad do you really want it? So many of us say we want to be successful, but we really don’t want it bad enough and that is why we don’t have it. You have to want it so bad that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Because until you get to the point where all you want to do is be successful and nothing else matters, success will elude you. It has to be an obsession.

  4. My life is in a rut
In life we can’t live between the ruts, it’s just too hard, it’s like trying to balance on a tight rope for our entire life – eventually we get tired and fall to one side. Let’s make the commitment today to scrape and claw our way out of the bad ruts. Once we’re out, just roll over and fall into the good rut. There will be short-term pain with getting out, but it will pass and then you will experience the long-term gain of living life in the good ruts.

  5. Challenge + Crisis + Pain = Opportunity
Why does life throw challenges and crisis at us, like the crisis we have all been dealing with for the last year? In every crisis and in every challenge there is an opportunity. We just have to find it. Remember, life is about who we become and how we grow when faced with challenge, with crisis, and with pain. It is what life is all about. It is why we are here. So step back and look in the mirror, who are you becoming?

Cool Apps: Save It for Later

The business world changes quickly these days, and while we try to stay on top of what’s happening in our local market as well as innovate in how we find, cultivate and nurture our client leads, our daily lives can get in the way. You know – our jobs and such.

That’s why I recently tried a bookmarklet called cc:to me. It seems that some days, I only have small segments of time to catch up on news, new apps and websites. CC: to me enables me to send bookmark reminders to myself on the fly.

The app’s purpose is similar to Instapaper and Read It Later, but it also allows you to just pull snippets like text, images or entire articles. This is more than just emailing yourself a URL.

To get started, go to cc: to me’s website and sign up with your email address. The service will then send you a link to your account page so you can either change your email address later or add multiple addresses (like if you want to also be able to send things to your team members, clients, etc.).

Once set up, you simply drag the bookmarklet to your web browser’s bookmarks bar. Now to use it, all you have to do is drag and drop whatever it is you want to send to yourself or others on your account to read later right into the bookmarklet form. It will preserve the content in its original format and include the website link in the email in case you need to reference the full article later.

In an age of information overload, apps like this can go a long way to keeping us sane so we’re not always sitting around thinking, “Now where did I read that interesting statistic?” or “What publication had that great perspective on the housing market forecast I wanted to share with my clients?” This way, you can use your spare time efficiently, and get the golden nugget of knowledge you discovered right at your fingertips later.

Thoughts on Leadership: ‘Choose Your Reindeer Wisely’ and Other Great Leadership Lessons from St. Nick

Believe it or not – there is a leadership story in good old Santa Claus. More than a round, bearded man in a red suit who jumps through chimneys to deliver toys, this old legend keeps plenty of leadership secrets that fuel his ambitions, endurance and success.

We all have challenges and St. Nick is no exception. Think of the disappointment around the world should he give in to these challenges and call it a day rather than persevere in order to keep the holiday spirit alive. This leader understands how important his job is and what it takes to maintain success.

Want to be a great leader like Santa Claus? The following are concepts that will inspire you to build and lead a better organization from a book called “The Leadership Secrets of Santa Claus”:

  • Build a wonderful workshop.
Every year Santa has a clear purpose.
What is your purpose? Focus on the answer to that question as well as the individuals in your organization who can take you to the top. Bottom line: create your visions and values and let those be your guide.
  • Choose your reindeer wisely.
While all the others on the team looked down on Rudolph, Santa looked for his unique strengths. He saw how Rudolph could contribute in ways others could not, and how he could gain acceptance from fellow team members.
In your business, promote the right people for the right reasons. Diversify your team and see the benefits of choosing different people for different strengths.
  • Make a list and check it twice.
The presents must be made and ready to be loaded on the sleigh and delivered by December 25 – every year without fail.
In your climb to success, make the most of what you have, create a business plan and know the power of a deadline.
  • Listen to the elves.
There is no way Santa could get it all done by himself. He knows he’s just the front man for something much larger than himself. Without his little helpers and all the reindeer, he could not accomplish his mission.
In your career, understand that behind every great leader is a team. Every team member knows they can’t make it on their own.
  • Get beyond the red wagons.
Santa understands that great leadership is about moving hearts and minds, not just about moving presents around the world.
This holiday season, as a leader, make an emotional connection with family, friends and co-workers instead of just giving them a present.
  • Share the milk and cookies.
Santa’s figured out his values. He knows what he stands for – laughter and joy. He then delivers the same message, linked to those values, again and again every year.
When thinking about your work ethic, know the power that consistent messages have to drive your business to success. Continue to help your team see the difference they make and everyone will perform at a higher level.
  • Find out who’s naughty and who’s nice.
Not only does Santa realize the importance of rewarding for performance, he personally monitors your behavior throughout the whole year.
As leaders, we know the importance of taking personal accountability for quality, especially when it comes to people and performance. How do you do this? A simple system is to coach those in need and to recognize the super star performers.
  • Be good for goodness sake.
Santa makes a connection with people and is consistent about those things that matter the most.
To become an exceptional leader, set the example and remember that everyone counts. Focus on developing the leaders around you and giving them their own platforms for greatness.

Apply each of these leadership lessons from Santa Claus and learn how to get big things done in your workshop all year long.

Happy Holidays!

Wednesday Wellness: Happy Holidays

Tis the season to be Jolly! Happy Holidays! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Fa la la la la…

Do these all sound familiar? I love this time of year; however there’s an element of stress and pressure that goes with these days before, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year ’s Day. There are obligations, parties, events, charities, shopping, travel, family and hosting, just to name a few.

As I observe, I can’t help but notice how most around me (and I can do this too) are so caught up in what commitments and responsibilities they have on their plate that the Holiday Season is more about making them unhappy, not Jolly. We thrive on “one upping” each other’s story of what we have to get done in order to make it through this most wonderful time of the year!

How about you (we) take a step back for a moment and look at our own lives right now.

Do you…

  1. Have friends and family who want to be with you during this time?
  2. Have enough money to bring a Hors d’oeuvre to your Holiday gathering?
  3. Have a coat to keep you warm while party hopping (Girls, we are our own worst enemy here with sleeveless outfits!)
  4. Have friends and/or family who YOU want to be around?
  5. Have your health? (trust me…this is a biggie)
  6. Get the opportunity to cook and bake, then share your creations?
  7. See people you don’t normally see and visit with?
  8. Have children in your life whose eyes are lit with wonder?
  9. Use this busy time to walk a little more while doing errands to help you stay in shape?
  10. Reach out to people less fortunate who would give anything to have your stress?

Now, don’t get me wrong, I can get caught up just like the next person, but for some reason this year in particular, I was able to get out of my own way and really look at how fortunate my life is to have this stress; this opportunity to have such a busy and healthy life.

See if you too can step out of your own way and take a look at this extraordinary time of year as a blessing, even if it makes you a little crazy! That crazy making might keep the fa la la la la in your life all the way in to the New Year!

Happy and Healthy Holidays!

Morning Mojo: Merry Christmas

Can you believe it? Christmas is only six days away.

I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and thank you for the wonderful gift. Thank you for the gift of opportunity to share Monday Morning MOJO with you.

By having to think, research and create ideas to share every week it has forced me to reaffirm what is important to me in my life.  By writing Monday Morning MOJO I have also attracted into my life more of the things which are important to my family, my friends, our company and me.

As we have discussed in past Monday Morning MOJO’s, one of the best ways to get more of what you want in life is to help others get more of what they want. I hope I have been able to help you do just that – you have certainly helped me. You have been my best accountability partner in 2011.

So, don’t forget to get more of what you want next year – help others get more of what they want. You have to give to get!

So, what do you want Monday Morning MOJO to provide you for Christmas?

I have been sending out Monday Morning MOJO now for nearly a decade and I thought I would ask you what you are struggling with in life, what breakthroughs are you wanting to accomplish but just can’t quite seem to make it happen? What questions do you want Monday Morning MOJO to help with? Do you have an inspirational story to share – one that you think can make a difference for the thousands of people who receive Monday Morning MOJO?  It’s the stories of real experiences that truly make the difference and have the largest impact.

My gift to you today for Christmas is MOJO. What exactly is MOJO you ask?

MOJO defined is:

  • A magic charm or spell
  • The art or practice of casting magic spells
  • An object, as an amulet or charm that is believed to carry a magic spell
  • MOJO is me sending you success, health, and happiness.

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!

Cool Apps: Send Out Cards and Intero Foundation Offer Easy, Unique Client Follow-Ups

Save time. Save money. Stay connected. Differentiate. Help at-risk kids in need in the process?

Welcome to the partnership of Send Out Cards and the Intero Foundation.

Founded in 2004, Send Out Cards has grown into the third largest online greeting card and gift company. While Hallmark still remains the leader, it does so mainly with a “bricks-and-mortar” approach.  Hmmmm, I have heard this analogy before.

Send Out Cards recently added an iPhone app to its offerings, giving users the ability to send high-quality, two-panel cards immediately from their iPhones for just over a $1 (which includes First-Class postage). This is a great deal compared to cards you buy in the store.

Imagine taking a photo of a seller’s house after your first appointment, and having them receive a thank you card with a customized picture of their home on the front, sent First Class that same day with just a few clicks. You can even include your customized handwriting and signature!

Send Out Cards has also jumped on the QR code bandwagon, allowing you to send a video along with your card by simply including a QR code. This should make Mother’s Day a bit more modern – that is as long as Mom knows what to do with a QR code.

Automate mailing campaigns with a simple upload of your database, make personalized calendars/photo books/and vision boards, send postcards/tri-folds/or oversized 8.5 x 11 cards(one of my favorites that stand out in the mail), and choose from hundreds of gifts to send. The options are robust, and they have something for everyone.

The final hook? With the structure of this company and Intero’s arrangement with them, you can join at a wholesale level and Intero will pick up close to half the cost. Every time the service is used, a small portion gets donated back to the Intero Foundation. The kids win. You win.

You can try it out for free at www.sendoutcards.com/InteroFoundation, or contact our representative, Kim Hunter at (650) 948-1610 or khunter@factpoint.com.

Thoughts on Leadership: The GIFTS that Leaders Give

This is the time of year when many people exchange gifts and messages of gratitude for the things we do for each other. As a leader, the gift you bring to your organization is important in many ways. “Gifts” take on a whole new meaning, as they aren’t material things you can hold in your hand, but qualities that you bring to the table to lead a team to success.

Here’s what we mean by G-I-F-T-S from great leaders:

G: Generosity

A leader’s generosity will spread quickly through a company. Being generous often means understanding that most people want to feel that they are part of something bigger and that what they do matters.

I: Inspiration

Leaders always make us feel we can do more than we’re currently doing. In order to inspire, a leader needs to show by example rather than tell others to be inspired.

F: Focus

Good leaders provide clear, consistent communication to all. There is no mistaking the goal and what needs to happen to achieve the goals. Bottom line, there’s power in the alignment effort that comes from focus.

T: Teamwork

Good leaders take us from “me” to “we.” The leader will model positive behavior and encourage people to work together to achieve success. There is indeed a connection between people and cross-functional communication.

S: Success

It’s the power of “we” that achieves great things. The greatest outcome is to see how someone can step up and lead a group to accomplish together what seems unattainable on our own.

A good leader brings these gifts to an organization wrapped in his or her own unique style. These contributions tend to have a lasting impact, pushing a team to success.

What are the gifts your leadership style brings? Embrace the principle of G-I-F-T-S and you will find that you and your team can go further and perform at a higher level.

As we close out the year and open a new one, we challenge you to examine the kind of gifts you give to others throughout the year. Be mindful with your contributions and you will no doubt become a superior leader in your business.
