Thoughts on Leadership: Fathers as Leaders

This Father’s Day, my daughter Alex made me a card (pictured below) titled “What My Dad Taught Me…” She mentioned the things she learned from me – everything from learning to ride a bike to the virtues she lives by every day. I decided to share the life lessons she learned from me, what I learned from my own dad, and the thoughts of several close friends of mine on what their fathers taught them. Enjoy the fatherly wisdom!

“My dad taught me patience, the power of positive thinking, and a love for pleasing people. Never in my life have I met someone who works so hard for the people he loves.”

-Alex Blefari

“Being a WWII veteran, my dad taught me to have a respect for all life. He also taught me how having a positive attitude impacts everyone, to do the right thing, and to always try my hardest. “

-Gino Blefari
Founder, President and CEO Intero Real Estate Services

“My dad taught me compassion – to treat everybody well, put yourself in their shoes and put their needs above your own.”

-Bob Moles
Founder and Chairman Intero Real Estate Services

“My dad taught me to never shake a family member’s hand; always hug them and kiss them and tell them how much you love them every time you see them.”

-Tom Tognoli
Founder and Chief Operating Officer Intero Real Estate Services

“Some of the things I learned from Dad were: how to love your wife; respect, generosity, and consideration of others; how a hard days work never hurt anybody; the importance of keeping your emotions between the lines- the highs and lows both don’t last long (or forever), along these lines things are usually never as bad…or good…as they may seem; and the final thing he showed me how to do perfectly…how to hit a lazy fade.”

-John Thompson
Founder and Executive Vice President Intero Real Estate Services

“My dad was a great salesman. He always said, ‘There are more nuts than there are squirrels to eat them. It’s a numbers game…play the game!’”

-Mike Ferry
Real Estate Coach, Founder Mike Ferry Organization

“My father never made me feel like I had any limitations. This was huge for my confidence. What he did was give me an inner confidence that most people trip on when they are stretching for their goals. He also taught me that there is always room for laughter.”

-Kathie Kingston
VP and Managing Officer Intero Gilroy

“My father is from the old school and I firmly believe his basic principle applies in today’s business plan: ‘Your word is your bond.’ If you don’t hold true to your word, you have no worth in business.”

-Robert Doucet
VP and Managing Officer Intero Willow Glen

“Protection, discipline, love and of course, ‘Please don’t tell mom,’ are words and phrases that describe my thoughts about my dad!”

-Renee Kunz
VP and Managing Officer Intero Hollister

“Some great lessons from my father include: it’s not about how much money you make but how happy you are doing it; care more about others, listen with your heart and talk with honesty; you’re measured by your sacrifices and loyalty in life; always be on time; be committed and follow through!”

-Albert Garibaldi
Intero Chairman’s Circle, Top 1%

“I think the most important lesson I have learned from my dad is to keep your nose clean and always do the right thing – this way, you won’t have to remember what you did. He says to this day that you only have your word and your name so don’t sacrifice either for anything.”

-Karen Nelsen
Intero Chairman’s Circle, Top 1%

“One thing I clearly learned from my Dad was a strong work ethic!  ‘Success does not come easy.’ And thankfully, I also inherited his excellent sense of direction!”

-Greg Simpson
Intero Chairman’s Circle, Top 1%

“My dad taught me to read the book (in other words…always know the instructions on what you’re doing); he told me to learn the computer (before email existed), and he told me to remember there will always be another ‘deal’.”

-Ivan Margaretich
Intero Executive’s Circle, Top 10%

I hope you’ll find in this exercise that you don’t always need to look to famous business and political leaders for guidance on leadership. Sometimes, you get the best insight right from your own dad.

Monday Mojo: Don’t wait, plan and set your 2011 goals now!

I know it is only the first week of December, but now is the time to start planning and setting our goals. We are not waiting until 2011 like everyone else to get our team thinking about what they intend to accomplish next year. We already know if you wait until January to put together your plan and set your goals, your first quarter of next year will be a train wreck.

We obviously have everyone setting their business goals, but it has been our experience that if you don’t have goals and pay attention to all of the areas of your life or any one area, no matter how good your business is, your life will suck if you are not balanced. The reality of it is if you are, then your business and all of the equities of your life are better.

So I am challenging everyone to set some goals around these five fundamental footings, the foundation of success for a great life:

  • Faith
  • Family
  • Friendship
  • Fitness and Health
  • Finance and Business

In addition to our business plan/goals, what we are doing is setting at least one juicy goal for each of these areas of our life for 2011. Then we are identifying at least one thing we are committed to doing on a daily/weekly basis in each of these areas to ensure that the juicy goal has the best chance at being accomplished.

Once completed, I am challenging everyone to take the time to review these goals with their spouse, significant other, their family and their friends. Let them know their intentions for having a great 2011. Then post them at all of the places you frequent the most:

1.     Your office

2.     The refrigerator at home

3.     Next to your bed (review them every evening before you go to sleep and every morning when you wake up)

4.     In your car

5.     Make them the background on your computer monitor

Then get laser focused on accomplishing them. If you review them several times every day it will be like magic and they will happen.

Make sure the footings of your foundation are set. Then build your castle and have an amazing business and life.

Happy Holidays!

Monday Mojo: It’s All In The Build Up

We look forward to it for weeks or months – lying on the beach, drinking a Mai Tai, and listening to the waves crash.  Oh, just the sound of it as I am writing feels amazing, refreshing, and relaxing. Then it’s over and the let down begins.

Do you ever notice when you go on vacation one of the best parts is the build up?  It’s like that for almost everything we do in life – it’s the building that is actually the best part.  Unfortunately, most people don’t realize it until they finally reach the destination, the let down begins and it’s too late. We look back and the best part has passed us by. We look back and realize it was the process of getting there – the build up or building of the outcome which was the best part. Hell – that’s what life is all about! Ask anyone who is on his or her deathbed.

All too often we think reaching the goal will make us feel better. We think things will get better when we finally reach our destination of success. However, if you listen to the true champions, the real success stories – they are present during the process and enjoy the process of growing. The process of getting better. The process of reaching the goal itself. It’s the rush of the building that fires them up. It’s the competition. It’s the small battles along the way, which they live for. The outcome is simply the result of what they love doing.

To accomplish all of your goals, love what you do and love the process of doing it. Even if you don’t reach your ultimate goal, you will be a winner and a success.

Remember the journey, not the destination is the prize – don’t take it for granted.

Monday Mojo: Grip It and Rip It!

I was watching The Masters last weekend and what a Masters it was.  As the pressure intensified and the players made the turn at the 9th hole, some folded and some finished strong, but only one persevered to win it – Phil Mickelson.

It is truly amazing to me what those guys can do – especially with thousands of people watching them live and millions more watching them on TV.  If you are a golfer you know just how amazing it really is.  One of the commercials during the tournament summed it all up great in just a few words from the late great golfer Bobby Jones who said “Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course, the space between your ears.”  I had heard it before but it had been a long time so I scrambled for a piece of paper and wrote it down knowing that had the makings of a great MOJO.

Think about it – the average golf course on the PGA tour plays about 7,000 yards…4 miles.  As big and daunting as it can seem with water, bunkers, trees, wind, lightening fast greens and competition…at the end of the day winning is not really about conquering the course, but more about conquering your thoughts.  It is our ability to remain focused, disciplined and remain under control in the face of stress, obstacles and competition that makes winners.  Everyone has to play on the same course whether it is golf, business, or life.  Like golf, to win at anything in life the challenge is mastering the five-and-a-half-inch course.  There are just some who know how to play five-and-a-half-inch course better than others.

So next time you are trying to figure out how to cut some strokes from your game at golf, business, or life perhaps we should look at hitting a few less proverbial golf balls at the range and look at doing things to help us conquer the five-and-a-half-inch course between our ears.

Grip it and Rip it!

Monday Mojo: Life is Not Baseball

Being a pitcher in baseball may be the only thing in life where there is a bullpen to finish off the game for you.  With everything else, in order to be successful, you need to not only be good at the start and solid in the middle, but you need to be able to finish strong.

In my job, I am always looking for ways to motivate and inspire people to improve and do better.  But the most amazing thing to me is how many people can get fired up about starting something that will make them better.  They are raring to jump in and participate, but once the novelty wears off, they end up petering out and vanish into thin air.  Not only do they not finish the game, but they can’t even get out of the first inning.

I have discovered it is really only those who have the discipline and commitment to stick it out once the novelty has worn off – those that keep up the hard work and discipline when no one is looking, that will be truly successful.  It is exactly why we see so many people hitting the gym and eating right on January 1st, when it is “the thing to do”.  But then by Feb 1st 99% of people are right back to their same old bad habits.  They are great starters – but horrible finishers.

I don’t care whether it is sports, family, faith, business, health, or whatever – if you really want to be successful at something you need to be accountable and disciplined in doing the activities it takes in the beginning, in the middle and in the end.

Remember there is no bullpen in life.  If you want to win at anything you need to “be in the game” from start to finish.

Play ball!

Wednesday Wellness: All or Nothing…

Have you ever felt like if you can’t do it right…then why do it at all?  Usually when we get stuck in this mindset, we tend to do nothing.

Earlier last week in the middle of the night, I got up and stubbed my toe.  I know many of you can relate to this!  It is purple, blue and red now.  In fact, I am pretty certain I broke it!  I never knew how important one’s pinkie toe is!!

Very regularly I take a Monday night heated vinyassa class…which I love.  Tonight, I waffled on whether or not to go.  Mostly I knew balancing on my left foot might be a bit embarrassing and I would struggle in most of my poses…at least to an onlooker who would be watching me.  I almost bailed.

Instead of deciding if I wanted to GO, I realized what I didn’t want…and that was to go home without trying.  I simply didn’t want to miss yoga!  I realized I could go, and leave early, or I could go and do my own poses, or I could go and just laugh at myself as I fumbled.

So, I went, realizing I don’t have to do it “right”…I just had to do it!

When we decide to try something, it rarely needs to be “all or nothing”!  Usually there’s a middle ground that can get us closer to what we want, or maybe more appropriate further away from what we don’t want!

Consider this when you are struggling with a decision.  If you can’t determine exactly what you want, maybe focus on what you don’t want and find a half way point to get away from it!  That half way point might be your step closer to a healthier body, happier spirit and clearer mind set or maybe just a nicer evening!

Monday Morning Mojo: 5 Tricks to Achieving Your New Year’s Resolutions

As we start a New Year this week lets all make a commitment to turn up the heat at least one more degree in 2010 and see what happens.  So many times in life the gap between what we have and what we want seems so far apart, yet most of the time it is not nearly as far apart as we think.  Click here to watch the video and then turn up YOUR heat at least one degree to make 2010 your best year yet!

Here are 5 Simple Tricks to Achieving Your New Year’s Resolutions. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

1. Get specific

A vague goal is as useful as no goal at all. General ideas about what you want give you nothing to work with and nowhere to go. It’s only when you get specific about what you want that the path to success is revealed. Take time to narrow down your resolutions into specific ideas and turn your vague goals into crystal-clear goals.

2. Spread the word

Don’t keep your goals all to yourself. The more you share your goals with others, the more life you give to those goals. It gives them the chance to grow and gain momentum.  So, tell at least two other people about your goals, and be sure not to make the mistake of giving without receiving; spend just as much time listening to ideas as you did in sharing your own.

3. Buddy up

When it comes to living a better life, few things are as powerful or persuasive as a living, breathing human being.  Books, tapes, etc. can help you along, but nothing can compare to one-on-one interaction.  The buddy system is one of the most effective goal-achievement tools you can use. By partnering with a goal-seeker, you’ll have all the support you need to achieve anything you set your mind to.

4. Burn the bridge

While preparing his next book, a famous writer listed his weight at fifty pounds lighter than reality. Not only that, but he did so knowing full well that only months after publication he would be paraded in front of thousands of his biggest fans. Why?  To burn the bridge of easy escape. He knew he needed to lose the weight, but he also knew he would give up on the goal without any pressure to follow through. By promising his public a fifty-pound weight loss, he had no choice but to achieve the goal.  What steps can you take today to burn the bridge of an easy escape and commit yourself to living a better life?

5. Do something – NOW

As they say, there’s no better time than the present, and when it comes to living a better life, they couldn’t be more right.  The true power of taking one small step comes not in the small step of progress you’ll make, but in the act of doing something about the things you want.  As you know, getting started is often the most difficult part of the process. Millions of people dream, but few actually ever take action…and that is why it is critical that you do something today. Think of one small step you can take right now that will bring you closer to accomplishing your goal and once you have it in mind, DO IT! Don’t think about it, don’t consider it – JUST DO IT NOW!

Monday Morning Mojo: Be One of the Few to Have the Best Things in Life

I want this…

I want that…

I want to look like…

I want my relationship with _____ to be…

I want my bank account to be…

I want my job to…

I want my health to be…

I want my weight to be…

I want my life to be…

I don’t care where we are in life, in business, in health, in faith, in relationships, in our bank account. I think we are always looking for ways to make it better – right?  As we head into the holiday’s and start thinking about how next year is going to be different, and how we are going to get more of what we want, here is what we all need to remember.  The best things in life are hard to get and require a lot of discipline and accountability to get them otherwise everyone would have them.

Earlier this week I was talking with a buddy of mine who had just gotten back from the doctor and was a bit rattled with how high his blood pressure and cholesterol was.  He is about to turn 55 and his father had passed away at the young age of 56 from a heart attack. Here is what I shared with him - this applies to anything in life, not just your health.

“Big Man – 12 months from now, let’s see you at 175 lbs., with a 170 cholesterol, and your blood pressure at 110/75 – on no medication and no booze. You will be inspiring your children, inspiring your family, inspiring your friends, and inspiring the world! Remember the best things in life are hard to get otherwise everyone would have them – be one of the few that does. Work hard on this and you will find a peace and success you never thought was possible.

Trust me – I know firsthand. Remember when I weighed 210 with my cholesterol level at 310, 180/110 blood pressure – I was stressed-out, frustrated, and unhappy.  I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THAT! Unfortunately most people live their whole life like that and never experience the freedom and relief.  Don’t be one of them, be one of the few. JUST DO IT!”

Discover Your Passion

What if I told you that you could do virtually anything you put your mind to? Even if you didn’t necessarily know that it was something you thought you wanted to do? What if I told you not only would you achieve it, but you’d exceed your goals and discover a passion for this new thing that you didn’t know existed within you? Oh, and you’d also lose over 25 pounds and 5% body fat in pursuit of this newfound passion, too. And all you had to do was suit up, show up, do the work and let the magic happen? Sounds impossible?

Recently, I got to witness a few of my clients complete a half century (50 mile) bike ride in Solvang. When they started “training” for this event, they were doing it because (quite honestly) their husbands were doing it and wanted their wives to do it, too. Begrudgingly, the girls started training, and signed up for the 25-mile event (while the guys were signed up for a metric century, or 62.5 miles.) But somewhere along the way, with more than a few thousand pedal strokes in between, the magic happened for them.

I was fortunate to watch as the passion unfolded for them. They started strength training, they began a nutrition program, and started riding their new bikes. Shifting? Nerve wracking for them. The saddle?? Ridiculously uncomfortable. And don’t even THINK about using anything other than their tennis shoes to ride with…

Slowly but surely, as they gained confidence and we went on ride after ride with one another, they began to flourish. They got new cycling gear. They learned how to shift. And they even used “clipless” pedals (which if you’re a cyclist you KNOW what a big deal this is!) With each pedal stroke, they came closer to realizing their goal of now a 50-mile ride. Inconceivable! And it no longer mattered that their husbands “wanted” them to do it–they now wanted to do it for themselves, because they truly loved cycling.

The big day arrived, and they had done their homework. No cramming necessary. Even though the day was tough at times, and glorious, too THEY DID IT!!! They completed the 50-mile ride. And without exception, every one of them said that never in their wildest dreams did they think they could do it and LOVE it so much. I couldn’t have been more proud and excited. The best part? They’ve already signed up for the next one…regardless of whether or not their husbands do it!

Discover your passion. Be willing to take risks and KNOW that you can indeed do virtually ANYTHING that you put your mind to.

This was written by one of Body Firm’s amazing trainers, Stacia Carney, who was able to witness this metamorphis over the last several months!

Monday Morning Mojo: Will You Make the Change?

So, here is the question: If people won’t make small changes to save their life, how in the world will people make small changes to make more money, have better relationships, have a better business, or have a better life?  That is the bazillion dollar question and if someone can figure out the answer you will make the founders of Google look like chumps.  Here’s a thought: Maybe in order to start making more money, having better relationships, having a better business and having a better life we need to start by making the most important thing we all have better…our health.

If I told you that I could give you some tips on things you can do to live longer, maybe even live to be 100, would you do it?  Would you make the changes? I hope the answer all of us would say is YES!!!!!!  Well, here’s your chance.  Go to www.livingto100.com and do the LivingTo100 Calculator.  At the end of the “test” it will tell you, based on your answers to the questions, how long you can expect to live.  It will also give you some tips on things you can do to live longer.

Here’s my prediction: If you take the test and if you make the necessary changes to live to 100, you will not only live longer, but because you will feel better and be more fired up that you are doing all the right things to give yourself a shot at making it to 100, you will make more money, have better relationships, have a better business, and just plain and simply have a better life.

Let’s start by making some changes in the most important area of our life and it will help us make some changes in the other areas of our life.

Here’s to making it to 100++++
