Cool Apps: Plan for the Future

Has this ever happened to you? You’ve run into a colleague who is energized, refreshed and inspired because he just got back from a killer conference in Southern California or an informal barcamp gathering in San Francisco. He stands there telling you how great this event was, how he came back with no less than 10 follow-up action points for building his business. All the while, you’re thinking: How could I have not known about this event? Sign me up for next time, please!

In real estate, like other businesses, we tend to get super busy and bury ourselves head first in work. Meanwhile, the world continues moving along and we end up missing stuff we didn’t realize was happening until it’s too late. Well, here’s an app that can help with this:

Plancast – it’s an app for sharing where you will be, where you plan to go. It may sound silly at first (Who on earth cares where I’ll be next week? Or why do I care where Bob Jones will be the first weekend in November?) But there are actually some great business uses for this.

Where the smart kids are

First, using Plancast, you can follow others and see where they are going or what events they are planning to attend. This is probably the best use I can think of for this app. Why? Because instead of hearing about groundbreaking events after the fact, you’ll now be able to see that Bob Jones Real Estate Exec is planning to attend this super cool 50 Ways to Rock Your Real Estate Blog barcamp next weekend. And you can sign up to attend too!

The key is following the plans of those who share your interests.

Where the real estate guru is

Second, I can imagine recruiting clients into Plancast to have them follow you. You can then simply lay out open houses, broker tours, or even just the houses you’re showing privately to clients. Show them what’s out there, what you are seeing, then let them ask questions.

Or, a more informal use would be simply to let folks in your Facebook or Twitter networks know that you and a few colleagues will be having drinks at the local watering hole on Friday and can answer any real estate questions they may have if they want to join.

What’s the catch?

Plancast is one of those apps that only really works well if others adopt it too. The good news is that it is catching on, and now they have an iPhone app to use on the go.

You can sign up for Plancast from scratch at their website. Or you can sign up using your Facebook or Twitter accounts, which would make it easier to get an instant network going.

Get a Fresh Money Perspective With Mint

Real estate agents can always benefit from tools that help make for more efficient use of time – especially when it comes to finances. In many respects, the agent’s life is a small business. And we all know how complicated the financial aspect of earnings, taxes, expenses and retirement savings can get.

That’s why I want to tell you about Mint.com. It’s the hottest thing in personal finance apps since online banking.

The site has gained a lot of recognition and increased its user base after being sold to Intuit (the same company that brought you Quicken) last year. If you ever talk to people who use it, you’ll quickly see why. They absolutely love it!

What is Mint? It’s an online money management system that does all the heavy lifting for you. When you set up an account, Mint goes out and pulls your data from your banks and brokerage accounts in order to build a financial picture for you. This sounds a little scary at first, but the company uses bank-level data security and has never had any reported problems. The company does a good job at explaining the security measures at this link.

We all know that personal budgets and savings plans are about as exciting as insurance seminars. That’s probably why Mint has become so popular – unlike the old systems that had you sitting there laboring for hours entering your data, Mint gets to the goods in a matter of minutes. You get real insight and you never have to open a spreadsheet once.

It tells you: where your money is going, where you could find potential savings, how your investments are doing, and now offers a way to set up and track goals for yourself.

Who doesn’t need that?

Mint can even help you detect suspicious activity in your accounts. And of course, they have an app for your iPhone or Android device.

To sum it up – Mint is like the personal finance tool for people who hate personal finance. It’s easy and dare I even say fun? Plus, all the kids are doing it. So if saving more and spending less were on your New Year’s Resolution list this year, you might want to step on over and give it a whirl.

Cool Apps: Things Are Getting stickKy!

Ever think of putting a contract out on yourself? I’m not talking about the sort of contract that’ll have you sleeping with the fishes, courtesy of a big guy with the middle name “The” (eg. Johnny the Fish, Jimmy the Squirrel). No. What I’m talking about is a contract that puts not your life, but your reputation on the line.

Interesting prospect, right?

That’s the thinking behind stickK, a personal accountability tool that’ll have you achieving your goals, be they personal or professional.

Let me explain.

Let’s say that you wanted to lose 10 pounds. Normally, you’d start out all gung-ho, but most people end up getting distracted by life, get discouraged by the diet or exercise plan they’ve chosen, or for some other reason, never achieve their goal. But what if you had some personal accountability — your reputation — at stake? Would you be more likely to stick to your plan? Probably.

stickK holds you responsible for the weight loss to which you’ve committed. With stickK, you log in and tell it how much weight you want to lose. After that, things begin to get interesting. stickK will have you select a referee. This is a person who’ll check in with you to make sure that you’re sticking to your goals. They can take your word for it, or ask for some sort of proof that you’ve done what you’ve said you would. You can also set the stakes higher. For example, if, with your weight loss, you said you wanted to lose a pound a week for ten weeks, you could set some financial stakes, too. stickK will take your credit card information up front and, if you don’t meet your goal, will ding your account for a pre-set amount each time you fail to meet your goal. At the end of your goal period, stickK will send whatever money it collects to a charity (which you select at the time you start).

Pretty hardcore.

stickK will also allow you to select supporters, or people whose job it is to cheer you on and make sure that you achieve the goals you’ve set (because really, no one should have to do things all on their own). You can add as many supporters as you like, and continue to add them even after you’ve begun your journey. stickK (and its community) want you to succeed! But remember that it’ll get the word out (however you set things up at the outset) if you don’t. Whether you achieve your goal or if you don’t, your inner circle’s gonna know about it.

And stickK isn’t just for personal goals. There’s a special section that’s designed to help organizations achieve their goals, whether it’s an increase in sales, greater customer satisfaction, fundraising, or any other goal that can be dreamed up.

stickK makes you put your money where your mouth is. It pushes you to do what you’ve said you would do, and takes you to task if you don’t. If you’ve had a hard time achieving a goal, maybe a little personal accountability is just what you need. Maybe putting a contract out on yourself will be the thing to get you on the “I DID IT!” side of things.

Stick to your goals. Get stickK.
