Morning Mojo: Challenge + Crisis + Pain = OPPORTUNITY

Why does life throw challenges and crisis at us, like the crisis we have all been dealing with for the last year?

Because that is the only way we will change. It is the only way we will rid ourselves of evil, bad habits, greed, ego and the wrong priorities. It’s human nature wanting to stay the course, not to rock the boat, and usually the only way we will change is if we are forced into it by some outside influence, i.e. financial crisis, death, illness, catastrophe. We have to look at the challenges of the last few years as an opportunity and as a way to re-prioritize what is important.

What has happened with most people these last few years is they are focused; no they are consumed, by what has been taken away and not focused on being thankful for what they have and the opportunities of tomorrow. Step back for a moment – the reason things get taken away, the reason life throws us challenges and crisis is because it is the only way we will wake up and quit overlooking those things which are really most important in life – our F5 (Faith, Family, Friends, Fitness and Finance). Challenge and crisis gets thrown at us because it is the only thing that will slap us in the face hard enough to get our attention. Think back in your life to a time of crisis – yes you may have lost something or someone. There may have been a scare in your life of some kind, and with that crisis a door opened. A new person appeared when you looked in the mirror, usually a better person, a more thankful person, a more humble person, a more caring person, and a person with better priorities.

In every crisis and in every challenge there is an opportunity. We just have to find it.  But, until we let go of the pain and anger of what we have lost, and focus on all that we have which is really most important, the agony will not stop. And, once we do focus on what we have, life will be even better than it was before. This week and beyond, make a commitment EVERYDAY to give thanks and be grateful for everything and everyone you have in your life. Quit being consumed by what you have lost, or the pain will not stop and you will not be able to move forward towards accomplishing greatness. If you can do this, not only will the pain stop, but life will be better and you will be more at peace than ever before.

Remember, life is about who we become and how we grow when faced with challenge, with crisis, and with pain. It is what life is all about. It is why we are here.  So step back and look in the mirror, who are you becoming?

This week is Thanksgiving – be thankful and be grateful for all we have in our lives. The rest is just “stuff.”


Wednesday Wellness: Making life happen

This past weekend I was riding my road bike with a couple of friends, going up a few pretty good hills, and one of my friends remarked, “why is it the ride up a hill seems to take forever, but the ride back down only takes a moment?”

I started thinking that this is a metaphor for many things in our lives. How often do we tackle a “hill” (problem, challenge, goal) and in our work to get to the top, we scratch and crawl our way up, only to zoom down. Do we take the time to hang out at the top and savor the moment? When cruising down, do we rush to get to the next hill, or do we take our time and notice what is around us, feeling how good the hard work of climbing feels?

Now that we are all working to achieve our New Year’s goals, intentions, or resolutions; consider savoring the “ride” up; the adrenaline in our bodies or the mental focus of our attention. After you achieve your intention, take the time to truly acknowledge what you have accomplished, and then enjoy the thrill of knowing, hill by hill, that you are making your life happen.


Wednesday Wellness: All or Nothing…

The other day I was going to my workout and was caught in some heavy traffic. Hesitant to make it to my appointment late, I considered not going at all and saving myself the face to face embarrassment of being 20 minutes late. I ran through all the excuses in my head of why calling and canceling my appointment with my trainer would serve me, as well as my trainer, best. I mean, why bother going late, if I could only train 40 minutes instead of 60? Isn’t that a waste?

I think the real reason I tried to talk myself out of it was that I didn’t want my trainer to be disappointed in me. Talking myself down from the ledge, I knew that he wouldn’t. In fact, he’d be MORE impressed that through a challenging day, I still showed up. So…I DID. I relished the 40 minutes I had and felt fantastic afterwards and (after the first 2 minutes), didn’t miss a beat!

Now, do I wish I would have been able to make the full hour? Of course! But, in life, we often run into so many obstacles which throws us off our schedule, that if we always gave in to the “all or nothing” mantra most of us would do “nothing.” In fact many of us do just that…Nothing!

I can think of multiple situations where either I or a client of mine was running late. Quite honestly, if a client of mine runs late, I’m ok with it; as long as he or she is also ok with it and it doesn’t make me late for someone else! I’m always happy when someone “shows up.” That shows commitment.

In my perfect world, I would wake up, energized and full of zest and arrive early for every appointment. I have and I try and do just that! However, as much as I try, sometimes “life” gets in the way and when it does, I reconnected and think how important it is to do what I can and simply show up, even though I wasn’t on time. When I have done this I’m always glad I did!


Wednesday Wellness: It’s never too late

How often have you heard, “I’m not going to change my habits, I’m too old, I’m too set in my ways.” Or how many times have you told yourself, “Ahhh, it’s just too much work, it doesn’t matter if I start changing my eating habits or exercising differently, I’m too old for it to make a difference anyway.”

From my chair, often I hear folks get defeated before they begin. They’ve already talked themselves into believing that no matter how hard they try, they can’t make much of a difference in their health. Really? How can “not that much” be a bad thing? Wouldn’t it be better to think you can make a small change (anything) every day, adding up to years of better health?

Well, enter two amazing clients I have had the pleasure to work with recently.  Dell and George. They are a married couple and wanted to become healthier; together. Dell wanted to lose a few pounds, know which foods are healthier as well as becoming more flexible and mobile. George wanted to “lose his pooch” (cutest thing I’ve heard in a long time) and eat foods to help his memory in addition to becoming more flexible and mobile. The kicker is George will be 90 in 2 months and Dell is young and vibrant at 86 years of age! What an inspiration to see people completely open to changing their health and knowing (not hoping) that improved fitness and nutrition will extend their lives and live with enhanced quality.

I’ve been working with them for just over a month. George has lost his pooch and Dell has lost several pounds as well, which has motivated her to continue not just with weight loss, but with adding vital nutrients and flexibility into their lives! In addition, they are exercising more frequently and are not just losing weight, but feeling better, moving more and making much much healthier and easier choices. They’ve motivated their children as well!

Whenever I think of them, I am completely inspired to continue on my own healthy path. We need more Dell’s and George’s in our lives to challenge our traditional boundaries and to open our minds to long and healthy mindsets!

Next time you feel you are “too old” remember that if George can lose his pooch at 90 and Dell has cut out her favorite fast food treats and replaced her menu with healthy low sodium choices; maybe you will realize you are quite young and change can be easily made!


Wednesday Wellness: Rear View Mirror

Today, I was asked a question: “If in 30 years from now you were in the same shape you are today, would you be happy?”

How about, “If 20 years ago you saw the shape you are in today, would you be happy”?

I am fortunate enough to answer “yes” to both of these questions!  But, it’s not luck; it took and will continue to take work, every day, every week, every year.  The payoff is well worth it.  No question.

20 years ago I was trying hard to get in shape, but trying all the wrong ways.  I was fortunate enough to persevere and find the right way to get in shape…the healthy way and a way which would “stick” about 12 years ago.

As you ask yourself these questions, it’s obvious you can’t do anything about the past, but you can make sure that 20 and 30 years from now, you can look in the rear view mirror and be proud that you made consistent and committed decisions for your health and well being so that you are either in BETTER shape than you are today, or in the same shape as you are right here in the moment you are reading this.

If you need to make some changes, what are you waiting for?  Do you think the laws of health, fitness, weight loss and energy are going to shift differently from what science has proven over the last few centuries?

If you love where you are at today, how can you create an environment in order to maintain what you’ve worked so hard for?

We do this in our financial portfolios, but rarely do we consider our future when it comes to our bodies.  Our health is an investment few of us prioritize.

Give this some thought this week and look down the road way ahead of you, but glance in the rear view too.  See what you’ve created in this moment and decide if this is where you want to be for your future.

As you might have read somewhere….Because your body is the coolest thing you will ever own!
