Wednesday Wellness: What Choice Will You Make to Push Obstacles Aside?

Last week I met with a friend who was going through some very difficult transitions, and largely frustrated by the choices in which he needed to make due to these transitions. He was digging in his heels, wanting the circumstances to change; yet knowing nothing was going to change.

Later, I was discussing this with my husband and he astutely reminded me that it is his choice to be upset, angry and frustrated.

At first, I wanted to defend my friend, but as I started thinking more about the situation, I realized my husband was right, it was my friend’s choice to be mad, or be accepting.

Now, I know (first hand) life feeds us lemons sometimes and we don’t ask for them (or we don’t think we do). For example, when I broke my leg last year and had surgery, did I want that to happen? Of COURSE NOT!! However, the outcome through my recovery has changed my life in ways I couldn’t imagine and in one aspect, today; I am a stronger, different person. (This we can save for another Wednesday Wellness topic another day!)

So, when I think of my friend, did he ask for his circumstances? Most likely not in the way he imagines, but he now has the choice of how to deal with the situation. He cannot change what is happening to him, but he can change his response and direction moving forward and dealing with the problem.

When I work with someone who has diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and/or obesity issues, I can ask “is this something that this person has asked for?” Most likely not; but what he or she will do with the hand he or she has right now, in this moment is their choice. They can be proactive and make choices to change “was” to “is” or they can direct their anger at all the situations in their lives which has brought them to this unhealthy state.

We’ve all heard this a dozen times, but truly, the choice is ours. We might not wish some of the circumstance of our life as our choice, but how we change the course of our situation is truly within our grasp.

So, as you read this, reflect on your life and what obstacles you have put in your own way, or what another has put in your way. What choice can you make to push these obstacles aside and move forward towards a healthier lifestyle, a happier lifestyle? What can you do to smile in spite of your troubles? What action can you take in order to make your life the one that you see you should be in? As cliché as it sounds, the choice is our own.

Wednesday Wellness: It’s never too late

How often have you heard, “I’m not going to change my habits, I’m too old, I’m too set in my ways.” Or how many times have you told yourself, “Ahhh, it’s just too much work, it doesn’t matter if I start changing my eating habits or exercising differently, I’m too old for it to make a difference anyway.”

From my chair, often I hear folks get defeated before they begin. They’ve already talked themselves into believing that no matter how hard they try, they can’t make much of a difference in their health. Really? How can “not that much” be a bad thing? Wouldn’t it be better to think you can make a small change (anything) every day, adding up to years of better health?

Well, enter two amazing clients I have had the pleasure to work with recently.  Dell and George. They are a married couple and wanted to become healthier; together. Dell wanted to lose a few pounds, know which foods are healthier as well as becoming more flexible and mobile. George wanted to “lose his pooch” (cutest thing I’ve heard in a long time) and eat foods to help his memory in addition to becoming more flexible and mobile. The kicker is George will be 90 in 2 months and Dell is young and vibrant at 86 years of age! What an inspiration to see people completely open to changing their health and knowing (not hoping) that improved fitness and nutrition will extend their lives and live with enhanced quality.

I’ve been working with them for just over a month. George has lost his pooch and Dell has lost several pounds as well, which has motivated her to continue not just with weight loss, but with adding vital nutrients and flexibility into their lives! In addition, they are exercising more frequently and are not just losing weight, but feeling better, moving more and making much much healthier and easier choices. They’ve motivated their children as well!

Whenever I think of them, I am completely inspired to continue on my own healthy path. We need more Dell’s and George’s in our lives to challenge our traditional boundaries and to open our minds to long and healthy mindsets!

Next time you feel you are “too old” remember that if George can lose his pooch at 90 and Dell has cut out her favorite fast food treats and replaced her menu with healthy low sodium choices; maybe you will realize you are quite young and change can be easily made!

Monday Morning Mojo: The Circle of Success

The key to achieving your dreams is making the choice to. The most common difference between those who have an AWESOME life and those who don’t are simply the choices they make every day.  It’s not their circumstances, the way they were raised, or their education.  Most people who are not accomplishing their dreams in life are those that have chosen not to. These people just aren’t willing to do what is necessary to have a life that good.

Think about your life for a moment, what do you want and what does it take to get it?  So, why haven’t you been doing what it takes to get it?

Before you start with all of the excuses, ask yourself – if you really had to do it, could you?  Let me make it clear how this is a choice – I don’t even like to think these thoughts, but it will help you understand that you can do it, if you want it bad enough.  If the person or people you care about the most lives depended upon it, could you do it? We both know the answer. Of course you could and would.  Life is a series of choices – I call them the Y’s in the road.  In most cases if you take the easy path – the one most people take – you will experience short term gain and long term pain. On the other hand if you have the courage to take the other path – the one most will not take – you will have some short term pain, but long term gain. So, make the right choice and have a life of pure magic!

Start by making the choice everyday to FEEL GOOD.  Because when you FEEL GOOD you are ATTRACTIVE. When you are ATTRACTIVE, you have AMAZING PRODUCTIVITY. When you have AMAZING PRODUCTIVITY, you have EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS. And when you have EXTRAORDINARY RESULT, you feel even better! It is the circle of success.

Make it a GREAT week and make the right choices.

Are the choices we make driven by our mindset?

Attitude; it’s the emotion which trumps and dictates nearly everything in our life!

For instance, have you ever experienced your paper jamming in your printer over and over again and on one day you are ready to take a sledge hammer to the printer, then on a completely separate day when it jams again,  you laugh it off and by that evening you barely remembered it occurred!

Take the day when you go out to dinner and you resist the chips and guacamole and choose a simple clean fajita sans guacamole, fried tortillas and no cheese. You enjoy the conversation and enjoy your time at the restaurant vs. focus only on the food. Then, there’s the following week when you go back to the same restaurant and can’t stop until you’ve eaten the entire basket of chips and will accept nothing less than something laden in cheese!

What happens here?

Why do we waver on our choices, our attitude?

Why is it so easy one day and so incredibly difficult the next time?   Could it be the way we choose to view the moment based upon our attitude?

I’d like to suggest this week you think about this when something you’ve overcome in your past (or want to overcome in your future) creeps up and becomes difficult in this new moment.  Consider your mindset, your stress and your attitude towards this event.   Consider that maybe, if you open your mind to the possibility that you can overcome it, even easily…you can!!
