Wednesday Wellness: Reach Beyond the Known

Last Sunday I had the incredible opportunity to ride around Lake Tahoe with a group of some of the most extraordinary people I’ve ever ridden with.

We began this journey together last January and rode together every Saturday to get ourselves in shape as a team in order to ride in Tahoe. Our aim was to ride at altitude without struggling, but most importantly our end goal was to enjoy ourselves above anything else.

Why did we choose Tahoe? Actually, our group instigator, as we’ll call him, had his own private goal to kick a debilitating fear which appeared a couple of years ago. He had a massive heart attack, nearly died and upon his survival realized a few things in his life needed to change. He knew if he could recondition his heart to ride at 7,000 feet without incident, he will have conquered his inner fear as well as reaching an overall new fitness level. During the journey, however, what also occurred was a change in nearly all the other rider’s health, mind set, focus, determination, nutrition and strength.

You see, what I realized in observing this group is every one of us has a fear we want to overcome. Each one of us has many! Each one of us mentally stop ourselves from conquering our fears, but when that special person comes along to give us a word of encouragement or, better yet, show us what we can do beyond our own beliefs, we begin to expand our own boundaries. We reach a little further, we stop stopping ourselves and we start inspiring others to reach beyond their limits.

Over the last 6 months we have witnessed a change in all of us, knowing we can do more than what we thought was conceivable. The vibration of this mindset starts to spread like wild fire.

During the ride last Sunday, there were riders of all ages, sizes and fitness levels. There were even a few on unicycles (now that’s a feat)! Everyone has a different story and purpose, everyone was inspired by something different, but with the miracles I witnessed in the months before the ride, during the ride and especially after the ride, I am left with a feeling that not only has inspired me to continue on my healthy path, but has stirred the motivation in a new group to reach beyond their health and fitness levels.

Thank you to those who were and are courageous by reaching beyond the known.

Wednesday Wellness: The Fast Guy On Race Day

I hope many of you have had the chance to watch some of the Olympics!  What inspiration!

What I personally am most fascinated by is the stories of those athletes who have overcome adversity, specifically serious, if not life threatening injury.

Let’s take  Askel Lund Svidal who sustained intense injury in 2009, now winning the Gold in Vancouver, or Lindsay Vonn, with her shin so injured she couldn’t put on her ski boot without excruciating pain, then went on to win the Gold.  Let’s not forget Chris Del Bosco who overcame drug abuse and a broken neck, to go on and be invited to ski on the Canadian team this year.

Every night I watch the Olympics, I hear of an amazing story about perseverance, dedication, commitment and sheer determination!

How is it that someone can endure such pain and hardship; then muster the courage to go back to the source of the pain?

I have read a few articles about the physiology of overcoming “fear” and I really liked this quote:

“As for the ever-present fear, many have found a way to manage it.  “You never overcome it. The fear factor is always there. I don’t care how good you are at your sport, there’s always a risk of injury, always a risk of crashing, so it’s just a case of risk management. Whoever can manage the risk best, while getting as close to that line as possible, is the fast guy on race day.”

Isn’t this really part of the game of life?  To overcome our fear and BE that person who is close to the line on our own race day?

These Olympic Athletes are special…that’s why they are Olympians!  But I believe the athlete in all of us has encountered our own falls, it’s how we finish the race, or better yet how we proceed IN the race that makes us our own champion!

Here are some great stories I found from athletes, local and worldwide who have created their own destinies through strength and “risk”.

If you read this Monday’s Mojo, you might have taken the age test!  If you did, one of the questions was asking if you ate candy…often!  Often, being a few times a week!

Well, I don’t need to remind you that this time of year, there are candy jars on every desk in every office.  Not to mention, if you have children, they will be bringing home candy after their Halloween jaunt and you’ll be keeping candy around your home to pass out!  How is one to keep lean during this time?!

At the end of the day, it really comes down to determination and discipline.  But, here are a few tips which can help you just a little bit in having that edge:

  • For the candy you pass out, choose sweets that don’t tempt you (for me that’s sweet tarts, jolly ranchers, nerds, gummy bears)
  • Set a challenge for yourself that you will let yourself have 1 tiny candy a day (like a mini Hershey’s (which is = to about 50 calories) OR you will not have any and save your calories for a cookie (e.g. a Starbucks cookie = 500 calories approx) 1x during the week
  • Keep healthy snacks in your car or at your desk so if you are tempted by the candy dish on your neighbor’s desk, you have “safe” food at your own desk
  •  Set a weekly health goal, print it and post it in an area to remind you NOT to have the candy
  • When your children bring home candy, let them have their pick of 10 pieces, then put the rest in a bag and donate to the homeless shelter the next morning…just past go and do it!
  • Remind yourself that the Holidays season is truly 4 days…Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years eve!  So, if you want to indulge…pick these special days instead of the entire 2 ½ month period!
  •  Hire a personal trainer or professional to keep you accountable to your weight and goals
  •  Recruit a fitness buddy to keep you accountable.  Not your best friend because they might let you “cheat”!!

Most of all, enjoy the spirit of the season, not just the food!
