Morning Mojo: Merry Christmas

Can you believe it? Christmas is only six days away.

I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and thank you for the wonderful gift. Thank you for the gift of opportunity to share Monday Morning MOJO with you.

By having to think, research and create ideas to share every week it has forced me to reaffirm what is important to me in my life.  By writing Monday Morning MOJO I have also attracted into my life more of the things which are important to my family, my friends, our company and me.

As we have discussed in past Monday Morning MOJO’s, one of the best ways to get more of what you want in life is to help others get more of what they want. I hope I have been able to help you do just that – you have certainly helped me. You have been my best accountability partner in 2011.

So, don’t forget to get more of what you want next year – help others get more of what they want. You have to give to get!

So, what do you want Monday Morning MOJO to provide you for Christmas?

I have been sending out Monday Morning MOJO now for nearly a decade and I thought I would ask you what you are struggling with in life, what breakthroughs are you wanting to accomplish but just can’t quite seem to make it happen? What questions do you want Monday Morning MOJO to help with? Do you have an inspirational story to share – one that you think can make a difference for the thousands of people who receive Monday Morning MOJO?  It’s the stories of real experiences that truly make the difference and have the largest impact.

My gift to you today for Christmas is MOJO. What exactly is MOJO you ask?

MOJO defined is:

  • A magic charm or spell
  • The art or practice of casting magic spells
  • An object, as an amulet or charm that is believed to carry a magic spell
  • MOJO is me sending you success, health, and happiness.

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!

Monday Mojo| Amy’s Inspiration

It’s been 5 years since my cousin Amy passed away from breast cancer at the age of 41. In the final year of her life she received Monday Morning MOJO every week and loved it. We shared thoughts back and forth via e-mail many times after I would send it. This is the MOJO I wrote after she passed away on my flight back home from her memorial service. I have made a commitment to send this out as a Monday Morning MOJO every year at this time as a tribute to Amy and her life. I think there are great thoughts in this MOJO that one can never hear too often.

I walked into my home on Saturday night from one of the most emotionally draining experiences of my life.

Attending and presenting a reading at the funeral of my 41 year-old cousin, Amy.

Amy was beautiful, healthy and living the American dream. She had a storybook marriage and two beautiful daughters (12 and 14) when tragedy struck sixteen months ago.

In the words of her daughter, “It was a clear blue spring day -well, at least it was outside, because inside it was raining. We felt sadness and disbelief from the bad news. Not just regular bad news – but the kind where your life seems to fall apart in just two simple minutes. We listened closely to mother as she whispered, ‘Its cancer,’ and immediately feelings of shock, anger, and fear rushed through us all.”

Under her tears her daughter said faintly “Just never lose faith. Nobody knows what it’s like until it happens to them. And when it’s YOUR Mom how you view the world begins to change. You look at the mountains and now see their magnificence, just as seeing my Mom smile became everything to me. I started to appreciate life so much more. During those final months we would spend time gazing at the night sky, and I treasure everyday what she would say, ‘I love you more than all of the stars in the sky.’ Looking back at how it used to be, and how it would have been, and how it’s going to be without her by my side – truly it will never be the same.”

Her words I repeated over and over in my mind. It felt as though someone had shook me – forcing my eyes open to see the world for what it really it was. Forcing me to take a hard look at the ultimate truth, the truth that has the power to wake us up and make us live before it’s too late.

“Amy is gone,” the truth told me quietly, “and someday you will be, and so will all the people you love – it’s just a matter of time.”

So I ask you – are you doing what you want to do right now with your life, or are you putting off living your hopes and dreams because you think there will always be a tomorrow? If my cousin were here she’d tell you differently, she’d say “there will come a time when tomorrow doesn’t come, and you are wasting your time if you are not loving and laughing and enjoying your days now, while you can.”

This leaves us with a choice – we can delete this message because we find it too depressing, or we can let this message be a force that pushes us over the tipping point into the life we dream of. That is most often what it takes, something so strong it carries us past our fears and doubts and the terrors that come when we think about finally doing the things we’ve been dreaming about for so long.

Let Amy be your inspiration this morning. And realize she had a great life, doing the things she loved, with the people she loved – and she would want you to do the same.

I’ve heard it all; it’s just not possible, I’ve got obligations, responsibilities, and don’t forget the economy, and of course the- I can’t just DO what I want – I’ve got a job, bills, yada yada yada…

All those excuses mean nothing when your time comes, and who knows when that might be. All I know is the days are passing quickly and now is the time to do what YOU KNOW you need to do. Don’t put if off, or you may just be too late.

We will miss you Amy.

Wednesday Wellness : Is there a perfect body shape for all activities?

Over the weekend, I joined a riding group in the Sierra Foothills on a “bike shop” ride.  It was completely last minute and I went more for the comradery, exercise and scenery.  I only knew one or two of the 50+ riders.

As I hopped on my bike, bleary eyed at 7:30 in the morning, I was quickly humbled by the level of athleticism.  It was everything I could do to keep up with the “middle/slower paced” group.

On a 4 hour bike ride, you really have time to think and ponder ideas.  One that kept coming up for me was the varieties of shapes and sizes of each of the riders.

One might “assume” a fit rider would be tall, young, lean, and have muscular legs.  I have to tell you, the age range was from late 20’s to late 60’s, and just about every height and weight passed me by at some point!  (and  I mean ripped by me!)

I kept thinking about what “athleticism” or an “athletic” body is.  Society dubs what “should” be a perfect shape, yet these perfect shapes often have no strength or health.  We are “shaped” as apples, pears, eggplants, green beans and about any other vegetable or fruit we can dream up!  That doesn’t mean we aren’t “perfect” if we have something other than a magazine emphasized body.  What we DO with our shape, how we emphasize what we are designed by nature to do is up to us; and if we hone in on what our specific body is good at…we can improve in ways we can’t yet imagine!

I find that I excel better at endurance sports and get crushed at most fast quick activities (that doesn’t mean I don’t have fun…I just don’t do as well!)  I know several who have beautiful perfect “shapes” but are challenged on a 3 mile walk.

Who is to say what our “perfect” is except ourselves (and maybe our doctor).  As long as we try to do what we can with our physical bodies, our best is a gift!

Go out there, look around, notice what you like to do and what you find your body likes.  Explore new things; try your hand at activities you are inspired by.  No one but YOU can know what you are capable of! Maybe I’ll see you ripping by me on a bike ride!

Wednesday Wellness: Revamp your health

There’s no time like January to revamp your health and nutrition. It’s just a natural fit after a month or two of cheese, wine, fudge, red meat, dips, cookies…shall I go on?

When you revamp, however, my suggestion is to claim “intentions” or “goals” of how you want to live your life, rather than go on an extreme detox or cleanse which will only last you a few days until you have so completely confused your metabolism, it won’t know how to function properly when you do add in the real food again.

Consider taking your intentions week to week or season to season. This helps you create new habits rather than yo yo dieting for a week or two until you give up. Consider creating your intention about a new habit you intend on sustaining for a length of time to where it becomes natural. Here are some suggestions I’ll pass on that a few of my clients have planned on initiating:

  • Exercising 5 days in a row for 3 months (5 days on…2 days off)
  • Trying a new, FUN, workout each month
  • Adding in fish to their diet 3x a week
  • Eliminating red meat, except for special occasions
  • Adding in more antioxidants (blueberries, red cabbage, red grapes, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, tomatoes, sweet potatoes) daily…committing to at least 2 a day (think colorful)
  • Having one cup of coffee a day, no more caffeine than that
  • Drinking one more glass of water each day than usual (and doing this before noon)
  • Replacing processed creamers with Almond or Rice milk
  • Having one sweet treat a day (calories no more than 100 kcal)
  • Having breakfast within an hour and a half after waking
  • Adding in super greens daily
  • Reduce TV watching and replace the time spent with family, friends or exercise
  • Go to bed earlier and wake up earlier

I could go on; but each one of us has little areas that we would love to tweak to make our lives happier and healthier! If you have one you’d like to try do it for at least a month, see how the 21 day rule works in your life and share it with a friend, or even me! I’d love to hear what’s inspiring you!

Healthy NEW YEAR! 2011 is going to be a great one!!

Wednesday Wellness: Yin and Yang

In my line of work I have the opportunity to work with athletes. Athleticism is an inherit trait in all of us, however some who I know go a little above and beyond. What’s intriguing to me in watching these athletes is the lack of balance of “yin and yang.” I notice that so often the “yang” is practiced daily (work hard, play hard, burn yourself out, fill every moment with something active) and the yin is forgotten.

In observing this, I have seen many injuries lately from back problems, knee issues, rib ailments and even the likes of colds and flu symptoms.

Sometimes when our spirit resists rest, our bodies decide to take over and shut us down with either an injury and/or an ailment.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could find this balance of yin and yang without being forced to slow down?

I believe this time of year is a great time to take a little down time and create the balance that so many of us need; before our bodies do it for us!

I hope you consider taking time out, yin time, whatever that means to you and simply enjoy the joy of “being.”

Wednesday Wellness: The Choice is Yours

This past week I had the incredible opportunity to listen to an interview with Ingrid Betancourt, a Colombian politician who was held hostage in the jungle for over six years.

In 2002 Ms. Betancourt was abducted by the Marxist guerrilla group, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC); never knowing from day to day if she would be killed, kept hostage or released. Read her story in Harper’s Bazaar.

Can you imagine, even for a moment, what it would be like to have no idea of your destiny or have any control over it? It’s hardly fathomable.

In one of the last comments Ms. Betancourt makes in this article, she says:

It got worse and worse. As it got worse, I decided that I had to learn from my condition. It wasn’t coincidence or mere accident that I was there. I had to give meaning to what I was going through. I decided that I needed to rethink everything about my life. And rethinking my whole life meant rethinking who I was and who I wanted to be. I lost everything — my hopes and future, and even something so basic as being able to talk to somebody or the freedom to go to the bathroom, eating or not eating — but I realized that I still had the most precious of all freedoms: deciding who I wanted to be. And nobody could ever take that from me.”

That last sentence got to me. She’s right, every one of us has a choice of “who” we want to be, how we want to react and what decisions we make each day to spark our happiness, our health, our relationships, everything. Each decision we make is a direct reflection of WHO we are!

If this sparks you, take a hold of who you are, who you emulate, who you represent and resemble and who you want others to see you as! It’s your choice!

Monday Mojo: My life is in a rut!

“I’m stuck in a rut…I’m just not happy with where I am in my life.”

We can feel this way about our health, our relationships, our job – we can feel like we are stuck in a rut, good or bad, about anything in life.  So, how do we get out of a bad rut? The bad news is it takes a lot of work to get out of it.  The good news is, when we are in a good rut it’s also hard to get out of it.

The key is to get stuck in as many good ruts as possible. I call them the ruts of life. Look at all aspects of your life – health, family, spirituality, business, financial, etc.  What kind of ruts are you stuck in – good or bad? Are you happy or are you sad, inspired or not inspired, purpose driven or not purpose driven, healthy or unhealthy, motivated or not motivated, have good relationships or bad relationships? I think anyone who tells us “its okay” or “I’m fine” is in a bad rut – they’re just in denial. They just don’t know it and/or don’t want to admit it.

In life we can’t live between the ruts, its just too hard. It’s like trying to balance on a tight rope for your entire life. Eventually you will get tired and fall to one side, so don’t be indecisive. You have to accept the fact you are going to get stuck in one of two ruts – the good one or bad one.  In the book The Purpose Driven Life it say’s “Nothing shapes your life more than the commitments you choose to make.  Your commitments can develop you or they can destroy you, but either way they will define you.”

Let’s make the commitment today to scrape and claw our way out of the bad ruts. Once we are out – fall into the good ruts. There will be short-term pain with getting out, but it will pass and then you will experience the long-term gain of living life in the good ruts.

Get stuck in the good ruts and make it a GREAT week!

Wednesday Wellness: Pennies from heaven

Every morning, I write my 10/10’s. For those who aren’t familiar with this, it’s a meditation of sorts where I begin my day writing 10 things I am grateful for and 10 things I want to attract each day. It’s a beautiful way to start my day. When I write what I wish to attract, one focus is I always ask for unexpected income.

I shared this with a friend a while back and an analogy of a penny came up. How many times do we wish we had more money, and then when we see a penny on the ground we step right over it? Well, we are attracting income, but when the universe gives us what we ask for, we don’t acknowledge it. When I realized the importance of this statement, I always pick up the pennies and make a gesture of gratitude that the universe is answering my requests.

I shared THIS story with another friend and she said that it reminded her of a story by a close friend of hers.

A few years ago, a good friend of hers had a son who passed away while in college. It was devastating to her friend of course. During an exceptionally hard time, he asked for a “sign” that his son was ok. Nearly immediately after this, her friend saw a penny on the ground and saw this as a sign that his son was alright and reaching out. From that day forward, he always saved the pennies he found and shared this moment with another very good friend of his who also started saving his “found” pennies.

Every few months when the pennies would reach several dollars one friend would call the other and say “it’s time to have lunch on your son”. This was a way they could reconnect and honor the memory of the soul passed away.

What does this have to do with fitness, nutrition, and wellness? Indirectly…everything! So often we go through our days in such a hurry we don’t acknowledge the pennies from heaven and the gifts surrounding us in every moment of the day. We step over the signs thrown our way thinking we know best and often ignore the answers right in front of us.

What if we cherished the pennies, the “small nuggets” of gold life brings us, then savor them to honor something bigger than ourselves when the time arrives?

This truly is what a balanced life is like; what being in the moment and honoring our health and wellbeing is about!

Try and cherish your pennies from heaven; see if you can pause and notice the small gifts life brings you towards an overall better balanced and giving life.

Wednesday Wellness: Keep Your Eye on the Prize

When you were a kid, did you ever get those cereals which had a prize at the bottom? You know, the secret decoder ring, or the magic whistle? Even if you didn’t really love the cereal, you’d eat through it because of the super cool prize at the bottom!

This is what it’s like with diet and exercise! There’s this super cool prize at the end. You know it’s there, you know you’ll love the results, you just might have to eat a little sawdust along the way (not literally I hope).

The prize at the end of the journey is usually worth it if you keep your focus on the trinket!

Now that summer is (80%) here, get that cereal box out (i.e. exercise clothes) and run, walk, train and lunge your way to the super decoder ring. Nibble your way through carrots, lean proteins, greens and fruit to wear the trinket!

If you don’t rummage, you’re not likely to receive the gift of health at the end!
