Wednesday Wellness: Happy Holidays!

I thought it might be in light humor to pass along these recommendations for “not so healthy” (but fun) munching this week! You might guess that I’m not an advocate of any of these tips, but I am fully supportive of having lots of fun and laughs for a great holiday!  *(see note below)

HOLIDAY EATING TIPS

1.  Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It’s rare….You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It’s a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by:
“Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate and wine in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming: ‘WOO HOO what a ride!’”

**If you do follow these tips, I’ll see you in January for a weight loss and work out program at Body Firm!! Whatever you do, have a wonderful week!

Wednesday Wellness: Put money in the bank

Tomorrow I’ll do it!

Next week I’ll get started!

As soon as the kids get settled, I can devote my time to my health!

When I get back from vacation…

There are a bazillion other excuses of why we put our health on “hold”.  Our intentions are honorable, but we always think we have “tomorrow” to start!

What IF you are holding off until “tomorrow” and you get in a severe accident and all of a sudden, you CAN’T exercise for up to 2 months…at all? Would you be relieved that you “held off” or would you be bummed out that you did NOT start your workout regiment? If you HAD worked out, you’d be in shape, strong and would get through the healing and/or surgery even stronger. You’d be able to balance, use your core and have the heart health to get through injuries easily. If you were “waiting” to start your body would still be out of shape, weak and make the 2 months healing time very challenging and difficult.

Does this sound a little out there? Maybe, but isn’t this like putting money in the bank for a rainy day? Maybe this is like eating healthy so that you don’t get diabetes, or maybe this is similar to training well for a marathon so you don’t get injured, or maybe it’s simply because if you DO get in an accident, you are in rocking shape so you heal fast?

In the past year, I’ve known women who deliver babies, men and women who survived surgeries, men and women who’ve survived car accidents and clients who have overcome diabetes and high cholesterol. Those who came in to these challenging occurrences with strength and health have phenomenal healing scores over those who aren’t taking care of their health.

What to do? How to “put money in the bank” you have to have this as your priority in your life so if tragedy DOES happen, you are prepared and can heal as well as possible because you are prepared.

Trust me; this can make the WORLD of difference 1, 5, 10, 30 years down your road!  What will you do?

Wednesday Wellness: No sweets challenge

In a couple of weeks, I start a “no sweets” challenge with several friends, family members and clients. This is something I did last year with about 10 others to help navigate through the pies, candy, cookies, and cakes (and that was just during Halloween). The challenge is to help us stay healthy and not become the “8 pounds of fat gained” statistic. It was miraculous and over the holidays last year, I think I felt better than I ever had during that time of year!

One of my colleagues is doing this with me and someone asked her “why”, you don’t need to lose weight! Her point was, it isn’t about weight loss, it is about what she could add in to her diet where the sugar treats take up!

I loved that! She’s right! What do we take out of our diet, life, love, and everything in between which is filled up with something that might be tasty or “good” in a moment, yet pushes out something vital and healthy that we don’t make room for because of it?

Now, I’m not suggesting you take sweets out of your diet with us, or am I…but think about what kind of sugar (or metaphor like sugar) you are filling up your days with and what could take its place and enhance something you have been missing!

Monday Mojo: The better you get, the better your life gets

Did you know the average American will gain approximately 10 pounds between now and the end of the year? 10 pounds! I know it is not pretty, but close your eyes and picture a 10-pound pile of ground beef. That is what the average American is going to pack on…frightening! That is why we are kicking off a Biggest Loser Contest in my office this week through the end of the year. While the rest of America will gain 10 pounds per person we will lose at least 10 pounds per person by the end of the year.

He was only 46 and dead from a heart attack. The doctors had been telling him for years he had to start exercising, eating right and lose some weight or something like this might happen. Every time he left the doctor’s office, after they added another medication to his cocktail for lowering blood pressure, lowering his cholesterol, and the array of other crap he had, he would swear he was going to get his life and health under control. He would start out great for the first week, but then fall right back into his old bad habits of hitting the snooze bar in the morning instead of going to the gym and eating crap all day.

Sound familiar? It should, over 50% of our society struggles with it. He really was just an average guy in America. We are an obese nation in the midst of an epidemic that no one wants to talk about. Everyone would rather talk about terrorism, war, economic meltdowns, natural disasters. The reality is an epidemic which will kill more Americans than all of that kind of crap combined is right under our noses and under our control to stop NOW, but no one ever seems to want to talk about it or do anything about it. We would rather criticize other people for things beyond our control as opposed to actually doing something about the things in our control. It is easier because we don’t have to be held accountable for it. Talk about frightening – talk about a ticking time bomb. The scary thing is we don’t even know the total ramifications of how obesity will affect our children and future generations. It causes cancer; heart disease and diabetes just to name a few.

So, what does this have to do with MOJO you ask? Well, I was almost that guy. Nearly 15 years ago, I had gone from 5’10” – 170lbs when I graduated college to 5’10” – 210lbs at 31. I had convinced myself it was okay.  I really was not much different than everyone else…I wasn’t fat…I just had “big bones.”  Sound familiar?

A year earlier, the doctor was ready to put me on all of that crap to lower my cholesterol and blood pressure, but I talked him out of it and convinced him to give me 6 months to exercise, lose weight and see if I could do it on my own without medication. Six months past and of course I postponed my doctor’s appointment because I hadn’t done anything…nothing had changed. Finally, a year later I decided to go see him again. I was able to convince him again to give me 6 more months. He told me that was it, and if I couldn’t do it, I had no choice but to go on medication “for the rest of my life.”  That was the moment I was at the intersection of the major “Y” in my life. Somehow I was fortunate enough to not just give in and take the easy road like most people, but take the hard road. It was the short-term pain for the long-term gain. I often talk about how life is a continuous series of Y’s in the road. I don’t care what it is in life, the key is when you get to the Y’s, 99% of the time you don’t want to go with the flow – you don’t want to go with the pack because they will lead you off the cliff. You need to break away and go the hard way, up the mountain, in the end it is where all of the rewards are.  And trust me, when I finally took control of myself, the rest of my life took off like a rocket, my relationships, my job…everything. Because to get more of what you want in your life, you have to work on you a lot more than the other “stuff.”  Unfortunately, because most people don’t ever have a breakthrough and take the right turn at the “Y” is the reason why I think people go to their grave never getting what they want in their lives.

Reflecting back to that time almost 15 years ago, the hardest part of the “old” Tom was everyone liked him, but did not respect him. He certainly could not inspire anyone. The old Tom was one of the top sales people in the company, he was managing one of the top offices in the country, everyone thought he had a great life, but it was always a struggle and hard. Everyone thought I was happy with my life, but it sucked except for my friends and family. I woke up every day with anxiety, tired, depressed and was going to WORK! Not anymore…now I wake up every day to play the best game in the world…the game of life!!

Today, I would consider myself pretty healthy and fit. I am not on medications and my cholesterol and blood pressure are normal. Look, I am not special. If I can do it, anyone can and as tough as it was to be that person nearly years ago, I am so thankful I lived that experience. It really makes me appreciate how I feel and the life I have today. And trust me…my life today is much easier than my life 15 years ago.

So, if you want to get more of what you want in your life, start taking control of it.  Once you do that it will be contagious in all the other areas of your life.  The better you get, the better your life gets.  Trust me…I experienced it first-hand.

Wednesday Wellness: Create Your Own Inertia

Last week I wrote about the idea of “all or nothing” when it comes to our workouts. What came up for me this week was an adjunct to this message. Many of my friends and clients are busier than ever and have expressed “why bother” if all I can do is 10 minutes – “What’s the point?”

The point is that you stay consistent, you keep momentum, you lower your stress and you create “inertia” (my new favorite word). Have you ever been on a workout roll, feeling great and BAM, a stressful week hits and you don’t workout or eat well. Then another stressful week hits and you continue to eat crummy food and choose to stop your workouts in any way shape or form. Then around week 3 of this new stressed out lifestyle, a friend asks you to go for a hike and you go for it; only to realize you’ve gotten out of shape in 3 weeks and you feel like a train wreck because your diet has unraveled at the seams right beside your workout regiment!

Had you carved out 10 min a day to walk or jog around the block and not given up on some of the basics with your diet (no white flour, lean protein, limited sweets and a fair amount of vegetables); that hike might have been hard but a whole lot easier than had you pushed your health to the sidelines.

The inertia** (see below) creates the momentum to continue a forward motion. This is POWERFUL when it comes to one’s health and wellbeing. Your inertia will help you create a lifestyle of consistent healthy habits – even when times are harder than others.

Give this old message a new twist in thinking and next time you feel like stopping consider a small movement towards continuing your habits – create your own inertia!

**Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of motion or rest. It is represented numerically by an object’s mass. The principle of inertia is one of the fundamental principles of classical physics which are used to describe the motion of matter and how it is affected by applied forces.

Wednesday Wellness: It’s never too late

How often have you heard, “I’m not going to change my habits, I’m too old, I’m too set in my ways.” Or how many times have you told yourself, “Ahhh, it’s just too much work, it doesn’t matter if I start changing my eating habits or exercising differently, I’m too old for it to make a difference anyway.”

From my chair, often I hear folks get defeated before they begin. They’ve already talked themselves into believing that no matter how hard they try, they can’t make much of a difference in their health. Really? How can “not that much” be a bad thing? Wouldn’t it be better to think you can make a small change (anything) every day, adding up to years of better health?

Well, enter two amazing clients I have had the pleasure to work with recently.  Dell and George. They are a married couple and wanted to become healthier; together. Dell wanted to lose a few pounds, know which foods are healthier as well as becoming more flexible and mobile. George wanted to “lose his pooch” (cutest thing I’ve heard in a long time) and eat foods to help his memory in addition to becoming more flexible and mobile. The kicker is George will be 90 in 2 months and Dell is young and vibrant at 86 years of age! What an inspiration to see people completely open to changing their health and knowing (not hoping) that improved fitness and nutrition will extend their lives and live with enhanced quality.

I’ve been working with them for just over a month. George has lost his pooch and Dell has lost several pounds as well, which has motivated her to continue not just with weight loss, but with adding vital nutrients and flexibility into their lives! In addition, they are exercising more frequently and are not just losing weight, but feeling better, moving more and making much much healthier and easier choices. They’ve motivated their children as well!

Whenever I think of them, I am completely inspired to continue on my own healthy path. We need more Dell’s and George’s in our lives to challenge our traditional boundaries and to open our minds to long and healthy mindsets!

Next time you feel you are “too old” remember that if George can lose his pooch at 90 and Dell has cut out her favorite fast food treats and replaced her menu with healthy low sodium choices; maybe you will realize you are quite young and change can be easily made!

Monday Mojo: The Pain of Discipline or the Pain of Regret…Your Choice

“I have watched The Secret DVD at least 50 times.”
“I listen to self-improvement CD’s and read self-improvement books everyday.”
“I have been focusing on what I want and have a great attitude.”
“I read your MOJO every week.”
“I am a believer, but it just does not seem to be working…I am still stuck in that same old rut!”

I tend to hear this over and over again, and what everyone is doing is extremely important to getting what you want in life, but you may be missing a few very important components. First and foremost, YOU NEED TO BE INCREDIBLY DISCIPLINED AND WORK YOUR BUTT OFF!

Getting what you want in life is a lot like being healthy and physically fit.  Being healthy and physically fit is not complicated, is it?  All you have to do is eat right and exercise on a regular basis. Simple enough…right?  Then why is half of our society obese, unhealthy and out of shape? Why is it our country’s number one killer? Because although it is not complicated, it is hard work and requires a lot of self discipline.  So once again, YOU NEED TO BE INCREDIBLY DISCIPLINED AND WORK YOUR BUTT OFF!

Another major factor which stops us from getting what we want is not being able to let go of what we already have – including those bad habits or lack of good habits.  It’s letting go of all those bad routines, habits, foods, TV, and in some cases people you are currently spending time with.  After you have made the decision to let go – YOU NEED TO BE INCREDIBLY DISCIPLINED AND WORK YOUR BUTT OFF to not give in and go back to the same old bad habits! Because getting what you want is as much about letting go of the old as it is about letting in the new.

I hear people talk about how they do affirmations, build dream boards, meditate – but then their day-to-day actions do not reflect their affirmations.  I can’t tell you enough how important it is to be INCREDIBLY DISCIPLINED AND WORK YOUR BUTT OFF.  Today’s society dumps so much negativity into our world every day it’s tough not to just give in. It is on our television, in newspapers, in magazines, exudes from our associates at work, our friends, and unfortunately in many cases in our families.

So, take a personal inventory of those things and people in your life you need to change, and change them! Then BE INCREDIBLY DISCIPLINED AND WORK YOUR BUTT OFF with a good attitude while keeping focused on what you want.

BANG!!!  Now you are on you way.

This is not something you can dip your toe in and try – you have to dive in head first and go for it like your life depends on it. Because it does!

It is your choice, live with the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.  It’s a pretty easy choice, but very difficult to do.

GO BIG!

Wednesday Wellness: Stop the Hours of Guilty Nonsense

I wrote this tip over a year ago, but this theme has been coming up over and over for the last couple of weeks, so I wanted to revive it and pass it along in case you are struggling with “getting going” and “keeping your momentum.”

How many times have you wanted to begin a fitness regiment or a weight loss program, but thought it was too hard? When training new clients, I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon I want to share with you.

When a new client wants to begin a fitness program, we might challenge them to walk just 20 minutes on their own. It sounds easy when the commitment is made, but when the day arrives and they haven’t scheduled the 20 minutes of walking into their schedule, somehow that 20 minutes seems impossible and not easy, so it doesn’t happen. What evolves afterwards is the interesting part. The client then goes into a guilty spin of “why didn’t I do it” mentality and then they end up wasting precious hours beating themselves up about it!

Another example is getting on a healthy nutritional program. Maybe the challenge is to go 3 days without having desserts. Well, day 2 happens and that cookie just was too tempting…then the next 2 days are spent beating themselves up again!

The energy spent on feeling bad completely outweighs the actual moment of following through with the commitment, yet somehow we connect more with feeling guilty than trying something new. Why is it we are comfortable in negative feelings? Interesting, isn’t it?!

So my thought for you today is to commit to something which, in the moment, might feel a bit uncomfortable because it’s different, but know that the ripple effect of this new habit won’t waste hours of guilty nonsense. Instead establish a comfort zone over time creating lifelong healthy living and a positive mindset!

As I heard one of my trainers say this morning…saying NO to a temping food is so much easier than actually burning it off through exercise!

Wednesday Wellness: Successful Eating

Have you ever gone out to dine and have ordered something off the menu thinking it was healthy, only to find out it was soaked in butter, breaded and fried?

A client of mine sent me a link from Joy Bauer, MD which I think is fabulous and wanted to pass along….

Cheers to successful and healthy dining!

STEAKHOUSE MENUS
Au Gratin: Baked side dish (using potatoes, cauliflower, or another vegetable) typically made with cream or whole milk, butter, and cheese and topped with buttery bread crumbs
Hollandaise: Heavy, classic French sauce made with butter and egg yolks
Scalloped: Baked side dish (usually potatoes) made with heavy cream and/or whole milk
Creamed: Cooked with cream (as in creamed spinach)

Alfredo: Heavy sauce made with butter, cream, and grated cheese
Scampi: Sauce often served with shrimp or other seafood that’s typically made with lots of butter
Fritto (Fried): Fried in oil (*Some restaurants in all cuisines have gotten more savvy in an effort to sound healthier and now refer to deep-fried foods as “lightly fried” or “crispy” on their menus. Don’t be fooled; if you have any doubts ask the waiter to explain the preparation.)
Breaded: Coated with bread crumbs and then typically deep-fried in oil (where it can soak up lots of calories, especially if not fried at the proper temperature)
Carbonara: Pasta sauce made from bacon, whole eggs, cheese, and sometimes cream

MEXICAN/TEX-MEX RESTAURANT MENUS
Con Queso: Topped with cheese
Refried: Fried, often in lard
Deep-Fried/Crispy: Fried in oil

Chimichanga: Burrito stuffed with meat and fillings, then deep-fried

CHINESE TAKEOUT MENUS
Egg Rolls: Vegetables and meats wrapped in dough and deep-fried in oil
Fried: Fried rice, dumplings, meats, seafood, and more soak up excess oil which adds more calories to your plate
Chow: “Chow” indicates that a dish has been stir-fried, typically in liberal amounts of oil; chow mein and chow fun (or chow foon) are both dishes made with pan-fried noodles
Egg Foo Young: Egg dish (similar to an omelet) made with whole eggs, pan-fried, and usually smothered in salty brown gravy
Sweet and Sour: A sugary, syrupy sauce that’s very calorie-dense
General Tso: Bits of meat (most commonly chicken) are coated in an egg and cornstarch mixture, deep-fried, and mixed with vegetables in a high-salt sauce

Wednesday Wellness: Coconut Water! So Much More Than a Tropical Drink

As summer is heating up (FINALLY) it’s important that we hydrate. I know sometimes water gets a little “boring” so check out coconut water! After all, coconut water is the new (or ancient) Gatorade!

Did you know that coconut water is an excellent rehydrator?

Did you know that coconut water has the SAME five electrolytes found in human blood? (Gatorade has 2)

Did you know in emergencies, coconut water has been used intravenously when conventional hydration fluids were not available?

Did you know coconut water is known as the elixir for hangovers?

Many coconut water advocates will claim that it can do everything from boosting your immune system to reducing cancer risk, menstrual cramps and eliminating a hangover within an hour after ingesting!

These claims are yet to be solidified, but as a rehydrator, for certain, this is true! Replace that Gatorade and try some coconut water. (Note, if you put it in a water bottle for long bike rides, choose the kind without pulp!)

Have some fun trying something new!
