Thoughts on Leadership | Leaders Know How to Attract Attention

To accomplish anything in life as a leader, you’re likely going to need help from other people. Regardless of how talented or accomplished you are, you can’t always assume that you can count on attracting and retaining the attention of others. It will be more and more challenging and rewarding to hold onto the attention of those who matter to you.

Attention provides leverage. The more people leaders can attract and motivate to join them on a challenging quest or initiative, the more impact they are likely to achieve. So, what are effective ways to attract and retain the kind of attention that helps leaders to address the challenges they face? Here are four steps that build on each other.

1. Embrace mystery - Frame the more difficult problems that are relevant to you and need to be solved. Help people to understand why these are such significant problems and why so many people have been unsuccessful in trying to solve them. It probably will not attract the people looking for easy answers, but it can attract those who are naturally curious and looking for stimulating challenges.

2. Focus inquiry – Don’t try to suggest answers. Frame interesting questions instead. Help people gain perspective by posing questions that intrigue and motivate them to start investigating the mysteries that lie ahead.

3. Excite the imagination – Provide some “what if?” scenarios to illustrate the possibilities that await those who manage to come up with creative answers. Paint the pictures but make it clear these are only pictures. Stimulate people to pursue the questions with a lot of energy and creativity.

4. Be authentic – If you are not genuinely engaged in addressing these problems yourself, you will not be able to sustain the attention and effort of others to come up with creative solutions. On the other hand, if you are on a quest yourself, leading by example, you could have a contagious effect and the encounters you have can help both sides to learn from each other.

Do these techniques actually work? Well, think of how Martin Luther King excited and mobilized a broad group of people to tackle some very challenging social problems. On a completely different level, one leading tech company in Silicon Valley regularly attracts the attention of the venture capital community by sharing its most difficult technology problems and suggesting that they would buy the start-ups that come up with creative solutions to these problems. Or look at the way professional astronomers have mobilized a global network of passionately engaged amateurs to learn more about the vast universe beyond this planet.

This kind of attention is priceless and powerful. All leaders need to find ways to generate it and harness it. This is not just an opportunity, but increasingly an unavoidable obligation. Leaders are all experiencing increasing economic pressure as individuals and institutions. In this kind of environment, leaders not only need leverage, but also need to more rapidly improve their performance.

Leaders get better faster by working with others. To do this, they first need to attract their attention. If they fail to attract that attention, they will not get better faster in an increasingly competitive global economy, and they could be overlooked. That is why attention is becoming more valuable at the same time that it is becoming rare.

By now, you’ve likely heard some buzz around Google’s latest big release called Google Plus. Maybe you’ve already gotten an invite and tested it out. If not, you should. I’m going to talk about why and how this new social network can be useful in your real estate business and go over a few basics of the road.

Why oh why do we need yet another social network?

This of course is the first question that comes to mind anytime someone invites you to a new “Facebook” of sorts. The short answer for why Google Plus is worth your time is this: It’s easy to use, takes seconds to set up and gives you the flexibility you’ve been longing for to segment your professional and personal social networking in a meaningful way.

OK, so how to get an invite if you don’t already have one?

The best way is to simply put the word out on Facebook and Twitter. Let your existing network know that you haven’t gotten an invite yet and are looking for one. Chances are high that someone in your circle has gotten in and can send you an invite.

What’s it all about?

The fundamental difference between Google Plus and the others before it is privacy. Google Plus is based on the Google Circles feature, which enables you to share and view content to and from specifically defined groups of people – and no one else. So if you want to share new listings or local housing news with your group of interested local buyers, then your cousins in Minnesota don’t have to be burdened with your irrelevant posts. Likewise, your professional contacts won’t have to see the pics from your summer family reunion.

How is this any different from Facebook’s list feature? Very very different. First, there’s ease of use. Google Circles is simple drag and drop. As soon as you get set up, you start creating your circles and simply sort your contacts into their respective groups. Second, there’s the segmentation of viewing content from these groups. So you’re not getting professional news and marketing tips alongside updates from your family members.

It’s easy to get fatigued by social media and resist the urge to jump on the next big thing that ends up being nothing at all (remember Google Wave?). But Google Plus really shows promise to be the best social web tool of all – especially for those of us who’ve found our personal and professional lives blending, finding it hard to keep up with all the content we want to keep up with due to this very blending.

Thursday Thoughts: Bob Parsons’ 16 Rules for Success in Business and Life

Bob Parsons, founder and CEO of GoDaddy.com, the largest accredited domain registrar in the world, sold his company for $2.25 billion this last week on July 1. Parsons credits his success in leadership, business and life in general to 16 rules he developed and lives by every day. The rules cover everything from specific advice for problem solving and decision making to more general lessons about the way the world works. I want to share Parsons’ rules here:

  1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone. Nothing significant happens when we’re in our comfort zones.
  2. Never give up. Almost nothing works the first time it’s attempted. Just because what you’re doing isn’t working, doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means that it might not work the way you’re doing it. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it, and you wouldn’t have an opportunity.
  3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think. There’s an old Chinese saying that goes like this: “The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.”
  4. Accept the worst thing that could happen and make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be. Very seldom will the worst consequence be anywhere near as bad as a cloud of “undefined consequences.” Parsons says his father used to tell him when he was struggling to get his technology company going, “Well Robert, if it doesn’t work, they can’t eat you.”
  5. Focus on what you want to happen. Remember that old saying, “As you think, so shall you be.”
  6. Take things a day at a time. No matter how difficult your situation is you can get through it by focusing on the present and not looking too far into the future. You can get through anything one day at a time.
  7. Always move forward. Never stop investing. Never stop improving. Never stop trying new things. The moment you stop improving your organization, it starts to die. Make it your goal to be better every day in some small way. Remember the Japanese concept of Kaizen: Small daily improvements eventually result in huge advantages.
  8. Be quick to decide. Remember what General George S. Patton said: “A good plan violently executed today is far and away better than a perfect plan tomorrow.”
  9. Measure everything of significance. Anything that is measured and watched, improves.
  10. Anything that is not managed will deteriorate. If you want to uncover problems you don’t know about, take a few moments and look closely at the areas you haven’t examined for awhile. You’re guaranteed to find problems there.
  11. Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you’re doing. When you look at your competitors, remember that everything looks perfect from a distance. Even the planet Earth looks like a peaceful place from far enough way.
  12. Never let anybody push you around. In our society, you have just as much right to what you’re doing as anyone else, provided that what you’re doing is legal.
  13. Never expect life to be fair. Life isn’t fair. You make your own breaks.
  14. Solve your own problems. You’ll find that by coming up with your own solutions, you’ll develop a competitive edge. Masura Ibuka, the co-founder of SONY, said it best: “You never succeed in technology, business, or anything by following the others.” There’s also an old Asian saying: “A wise man keeps his own counsel.”
  15. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Lighten up. Often, at least half of what we accomplish is due to luck. None of us are in control as much as we like to think we are.
  16. There’s always a reason to smile. Find it. After all, we’re really lucky just to be alive. Life is short. Parsons says his little brother always reminds him, “We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time!”

The biggest leadership takeaway for me from Parsons’ 16 rules is Rule #7: Always move forward. By focusing on small daily improvements, you’ll eventually see huge advantages. This is doable, positive and a great leadership philosophy. Now get out there and do it.


Monday Mojo: What would you do with $86,400 a day?

If you received $86,400 every day of your life and you had to spend it or lose it by the end of each day, what would you do? Would you let the $86,400 just slip through your fingers and not worry about it if you did not spend it all? Would you invest it wisely? Would you give some to charity or your church, to your family, to your friends? Would you invest it in your F-5…your Faith, Family, Friends, Fitness, Finance/Business? Would you become a fanatic about putting together your plan RIGHT NOW to make sure you did not waste a single cent? Of course we all would not waste one red cent, would we?

So that is what we would do with money. What about your time? We all have 86,400 seconds in everyday. How are you spending it? Have you been a fanatic about putting together your plan and executing on it so you don’t waste a second? Remember, every day we are either going to use it or we are going to lose it. Put together your plan and execute on making sure you are investing every second of your life in your F-5. Just as important, remember we all only have 86,400 seconds in a day, so respect other people’s time as well…don’t waste a second of their time either.

Wednesday Wellness: Making life happen

This past weekend I was riding my road bike with a couple of friends, going up a few pretty good hills, and one of my friends remarked, “why is it the ride up a hill seems to take forever, but the ride back down only takes a moment?”

I started thinking that this is a metaphor for many things in our lives. How often do we tackle a “hill” (problem, challenge, goal) and in our work to get to the top, we scratch and crawl our way up, only to zoom down. Do we take the time to hang out at the top and savor the moment? When cruising down, do we rush to get to the next hill, or do we take our time and notice what is around us, feeling how good the hard work of climbing feels?

Now that we are all working to achieve our New Year’s goals, intentions, or resolutions; consider savoring the “ride” up; the adrenaline in our bodies or the mental focus of our attention. After you achieve your intention, take the time to truly acknowledge what you have accomplished, and then enjoy the thrill of knowing, hill by hill, that you are making your life happen.


Wednesday Wellness: Revamp your health

There’s no time like January to revamp your health and nutrition. It’s just a natural fit after a month or two of cheese, wine, fudge, red meat, dips, cookies…shall I go on?

When you revamp, however, my suggestion is to claim “intentions” or “goals” of how you want to live your life, rather than go on an extreme detox or cleanse which will only last you a few days until you have so completely confused your metabolism, it won’t know how to function properly when you do add in the real food again.

Consider taking your intentions week to week or season to season. This helps you create new habits rather than yo yo dieting for a week or two until you give up. Consider creating your intention about a new habit you intend on sustaining for a length of time to where it becomes natural. Here are some suggestions I’ll pass on that a few of my clients have planned on initiating:

  • Exercising 5 days in a row for 3 months (5 days on…2 days off)
  • Trying a new, FUN, workout each month
  • Adding in fish to their diet 3x a week
  • Eliminating red meat, except for special occasions
  • Adding in more antioxidants (blueberries, red cabbage, red grapes, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, tomatoes, sweet potatoes) daily…committing to at least 2 a day (think colorful)
  • Having one cup of coffee a day, no more caffeine than that
  • Drinking one more glass of water each day than usual (and doing this before noon)
  • Replacing processed creamers with Almond or Rice milk
  • Having one sweet treat a day (calories no more than 100 kcal)
  • Having breakfast within an hour and a half after waking
  • Adding in super greens daily
  • Reduce TV watching and replace the time spent with family, friends or exercise
  • Go to bed earlier and wake up earlier

I could go on; but each one of us has little areas that we would love to tweak to make our lives happier and healthier! Monday Mojo: Take a Lesson From The Processionary Caterpillar

An epidemic is occurring all around us and there is a good chance it has already found its way into some of our lives.  It begins slowly at first, but it grows, and in time it can take over our entire life…and if we don’t act now, it may happen to you.  It’s easy to fall in the trap. Well-intentioned people of all ages don’t mean for it to happen, but that doesn’t matter. It takes much more than good intentions to steer clear of this problem. If all it took were good intentions, the world would be packed with people living their dreams and accomplishing their goals.  But that’s not how it works and this trap is one of the most common reasons why it has happened too often in the past and will continue to happen in the future.  What exactly are we dealing with here?  What is so deadly to the goals and hopes we have stored away in our head?

Routine!!! More specifically, a BAD routine.

What am I talking about you ask?

The routines I’m referring to are much deeper than a morning process of a shower and shave. I’m talking about turning off our brains and letting autopilot kick in. Doing the same things we did the day before with no plans to change the pattern any time soon.  You know the drill – wake up, shower, work, home and sleep.  This is no way to live, and you know that.  But it’s still hard to break free once the bad routine has gotten hold of us. All hope is not lost. If we want to turn off the autopilot and start taking control of our lives it takes only one moment to make the decision. And then everything changes. You’ve heard it a thousands times, and it’s a good thing, because it’s true. If you keep doing what you have always done in the past you will keep getting the exact same thing in the future.

People experience a partial insanity when it comes to routine. Perfectly logical people believe that doing the same thing again and again will get different results. That’s crazy!  If we want to lose weight but continue with the same eating habits, we won’t lose weight.  If we want to make more money but keep doing the same things day in day out, it’s not going to happen.

We have goals, but if we are stuck in a bad routine we won’t accomplish them. Be honest with yourself about this one. It’s the only way we’ll realize the need for a change before we can enjoy improvement.  Create a new and improved routine, which is in alignment with what you want in life.

What does it take? It takes a decision. A choice of what we really want to do with our life and the actions to make it happen. If we know where we are going, how to get there and have a good new and improved routine to make it happen, we will not be disappointed in the end.

A very unusual experiment was conducted by Jean Henri Fabre, a French entomologist, consisting of processionary caterpillars, a type of caterpillar that blindly follows the one in front of it. The experiment consisted of several of these caterpillars, a flowerpot filled to the rim with dirt, and pine needles.  The caterpillars formed a complete circle around the rim of the flowerpot, with the first one touching the back of the last one. The pine needles, the food of the processionary caterpillar, were placed in the center of the circle. The caterpillars began their procession and continued on the same path hour after hour, day after day, for an entire week. In the end, every one of the caterpillars dropped dead of starvation. The one thing that could have saved them was only inches away, but without purposeful thought or action, the caterpillars continued with a habitual routine that eventually proved too much to endure.

This is happening to people we know…maybe even you.  Get stuck doing the same old thing every single day and your goals, sitting only inches away, are as good as gone…plain and simple. You might think it’s a little too simple, but falling into a bad routine can destroy your life.  People start off with bright hopes for the future, but their bad routine begins to take their place. “No time…no time,” is a common excuse. After seventy+/- years of having no time to do the things you have always wanted to do, you’ll end up with nothing but a good excuse in the end.

This is your life we are talking about here. It’s worth taking the time to break the pattern of habit and creating the changes you wish to make.  There is little more that is as important as the life you create and the good you leave behind. Recognize if you are in a bad routine, break free and get into a good routine.  Sometimes it’s a matter of what we all seek in life – confidence.  Permanent change requires courage and a strong belief in your ability to succeed, something that we all doubt from time to time.

Break your old routine, get a new and improved routine, and then have a GREAT week and a GREAT life!


Monday Mojo: GO GIANTS!

“Dad…don’t worry, you can go to the World Series when I am playing in it…I will give you tickets.”  This is what my 11-year-old son told me last week when the Giants made it to the World Series. I LOVE IT!

Nick is 11 and is an absolute baseball freak. When it comes to the Giants he is absolutely off the hook.  He went out trick-or-treating last night dressed as…you guessed it – a San Francisco Giant.

Nick is absolutely convinced beyond a doubt that he is not only going to play college baseball and then play in the Major Leagues, but he is 100% convinced when he gets there he will be playing in a World Series.  So, when the Giants made the World Series we talked about how cool it would be to get tickets, but unless you are willing to drop over $1,000 for two tickets to sit in the nose bleed section, getting to a game live is impossible. So, Nick told my wife and I not to worry about it because we can go to a World Series when he plays in one.

This reminded me of when we were kids anything was possible and nobody told us “no you can’t.” So, what happened to our dreams?

Somewhere along the way we stop dreaming and start doing, that is when it all stops. That is when our lives start to lose purpose and when we stop growing.

Those dreams we had as kids were like a magnet which pulled us to what we wanted in life- they made us excited to go for it every day.  Think about the last time you truly thought about what you wanted to be when you grew up?

Growing into what you want to become does not have to stop. We can breakaway and get off the hamster wheel anytime and start moving forward again like when we were kids. We just have to take time to dream and believe. Break away from the pack, and go for it. Don’t blend in. Be different.

It is uncomfortable at first when you step outside of your comfort zone and get off the hamster wheel where it was safe. But if you have the courage, there is still a lot more you can accomplish in this life.

Wednesday Wellness: The power of visualization

Recently it was suggested to me that I try visualizing what I want. 
 
Now, I write in a gratitude journal daily and I write what I want to attract daily and these are fabulous tools I integrate into my life. I love the practice.
 
In yoga, I meditate.
 
When I cycle, I focus.
 
When I run, I process.
 
When I train, I detach.
 
However, I don’t think I have ever sat still for 10 minutes, closed my eyes and simply visualized what I want! 10 minutes is a long time! How does one stay focused?
 
Well, due to some circumstances beyond my control right now (look for this in a future Wednesday Wellness); I have decided to try the power of visualization. I’ve shared this commitment with a few who do visualize and I’m told I could potentially achieve anything with the power of positive thinking and belief, but I must take the time to practice.
 
I wanted to share this thought with you and suggest if this rings a little bell for you somewhere in the back of your mind, that you try it as well. I am committed to doing this every day for the next 7 weeks for 10 minutes a day. I am excited at the prospect of the outcome!

Monday Mojo: My life is in a rut!

“I’m stuck in a rut…I’m just not happy with where I am in my life.”

We can feel this way about our health, our relationships, our job – we can feel like we are stuck in a rut, good or bad, about anything in life.  So, how do we get out of a bad rut? The bad news is it takes a lot of work to get out of it.  The good news is, when we are in a good rut it’s also hard to get out of it.

The key is to get stuck in as many good ruts as possible. I call them the ruts of life. Look at all aspects of your life – health, family, spirituality, business, financial, etc.  What kind of ruts are you stuck in – good or bad? Are you happy or are you sad, inspired or not inspired, purpose driven or not purpose driven, healthy or unhealthy, motivated or not motivated, have good relationships or bad relationships? I think anyone who tells us “its okay” or “I’m fine” is in a bad rut – they’re just in denial. They just don’t know it and/or don’t want to admit it.

In life we can’t live between the ruts, its just too hard. It’s like trying to balance on a tight rope for your entire life. Eventually you will get tired and fall to one side, so don’t be indecisive. You have to accept the fact you are going to get stuck in one of two ruts – the good one or bad one.  In the book The Purpose Driven Life it say’s “Nothing shapes your life more than the commitments you choose to make.  Your commitments can develop you or they can destroy you, but either way they will define you.”

Let’s make the commitment today to scrape and claw our way out of the bad ruts. Once we are out – fall into the good ruts. There will be short-term pain with getting out, but it will pass and then you will experience the long-term gain of living life in the good ruts.
