Thursday Thoughts: True Leaders do the right thing, always

“Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things”

This quote sums up so much of what I believe to be true about leadership. The art of leadership involves much more than execution. It takes you far deeper than management, it calls upon your feel for what is right, but most importantly, it demands responsibility – a steadfast ownership of the values that define you and the actions you take.

This sense of responsibility is one of the most important but often misunderstood dimensions to inspired leadership. Without responsibility neither you nor the people you are charged with leading have a true compass that guides actions and decision making.

What does responsible leadership entail? Here’s my starter list:

  • Responsible leaders are responsible for establishing the atmosphere for the office or company they are asked to lead
  • Responsible leaders establish the ethical boundaries and understanding of integrity within their organizations by their own actions, not their words. Leaders don’t say one thing and do another.
  • Responsible leaders model respect for colleagues and customers
  • Responsible leaders establish and constantly reinforce standards of performance – for their agents, employees and themselves
  • Responsible leaders encourage creativity and innovation among their agents and employees while ensuring that these energies remain consistent with the larger goals of the organization
  • Responsible leaders provide direction to agents and employees that have drifted from the organization’s strategic direction and culture
  • Responsible leaders recognize that it is from themselves that most is expected

Are you ready for that? If you desire a position of leadership, understand that you must be prepared for responsibility and a commitment to find, in Drucker’s words, the right things in everything you do.


Thursday Thoughts: The 10 qualities of a true leader

People often ask me to share the secret to successful leadership – the one magical thing that propels people to positions of responsibility and respect.

But there is no “secret” and there is no one thing I can impart. The truth is the recipe for true leadership is a complex blend of qualities that shift in importance with time and circumstances. This is not an easy answer, but then leadership is not easy, is it?

Here, in no particular order of importance, are the 10 qualities I believe every leader must understand, cling to and put to practice.

It’s a list I reflect on often myself. I hope you will too.

  1. A desire to be recognized, and a commitment to achieving that recognition through unfailing honesty
  2. Resilience: the capacity to overcome setbacks, adversity, rejection quickly – and with grace
  3. An awareness that the extremes of your personality will be the drivers of your success (but may also be talked about at company parties!)
  4. A boundless willingness to work hard – not only to achieve your personal goals, but to inspire tenacity in those around you
  5. An ability to alternately employ passion and common sense to solve problems.
  6. The confidence to rise above fear of strong colleagues. Famed marketer Guy Kawasaki said, “A players surround themselves with A+ players – it’s the only way to get where you want to go.”
  7. A willingness to make unrecognized sacrifices for those you lead. It is often the smallest kindness or most private act of generosity that has the biggest impact.
  8. A passion to succeed that is matched only by a desire to see those who work for you succeed
  9. An ability to recognize that you are unfinished work that can be constantly improved upon by learning
  10. An abiding sense of humility that keeps you down to earth no matter how far you rise

As you think about your career – indeed, your life – ask yourself which of these qualities you might work more diligently to cultivate. Your progress toward leadership will accelerate to the extent you answer with honesty and conviction.


Monday Mojo: Short Term Pain for Long Term Gain

“I’m not a morning person” I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that over the years.

So often people talk about how they just can’t squeeze in the most important activities in their life because “I’m not a morning person”.  When we are young and with little or no responsibility except for ourselves…or retired and our kids are out of the house, it is easier to slip in those important activities after that first cup of Joe in the morning, at lunch, in the afternoon, in the early evening.  For me, that is not an option…and my guess is for most of your reading this that is not an option either.  We have kids, house, lunches to make, work, kids homework, little league, dinner to make, grocery shopping, wash…the list goes on and on.

Trust me, when my alarm goes off in the morning at 4:45, I am not all fired up to jump out of bed and “hit it”.   Candidly, many mornings I am telling myself “you have got to be kidding me…it feels like I just closed my eyes”.  But I know the short term pain and discipline of putting my feet on the floor and getting started with my day is easier than the long term pain of regret, disappointment and not accomplishing my goals.

Let’s face it…for many of us we have tried for years and years to squeeze in those most important activities sometime during the day, but then life gets in the way and the most important activities end up taking second fiddle to the chaos.  I am not saying you have to wake up at 4:45, but if you really want to get those most important activities done, unless you are an anomaly, you probably need to do it first thing of the day before the chaos begins, while most of the rest of the world is still sleeping.

Remember, we are our biggest asset and if we don’t make a commitment to take care of our body, mind and soul no one else will.  You can’t delegate it, you can’t run down to the store and buy it…you have to have the discipline to JUST DO IT!!!!!
