Wednesday Wellness: Love Notes

Have you ever had a coach, mentor or friend act like your own personal “cheerleader” on tough days? They are the bright spot when your day is a little gray and they are your “push” and confidence when you feel like you simply want to lie down and take a nap, but have you considered that you could also be your own personal cheerleader?

I have an “out of the box” suggestion; one I tried myself not too long ago.

In the next day or two, sit down and write yourself a “love note” or “pep talk” and log it in to your Outlook or Google calendar each day for 7 consecutive days.

For instance, let’s say you are starting a new workout program and you’re a little hesitant on how motivated you will be on day 3 or 4. Calendar out to day 3 and on that day pre-write yourself a little note saying something like, “I know you are sore from your last 2 workouts, but you also know you love the feeling afterwards so put on your shoes, take a deep breath and don’t hesitate! Just do it and look forward to how you will feel once it’s done.”

Another suggestion might be you are in the middle of negotiating a big transaction and if history repeats itself things are going to heat up quite a bit and stress levels will be high. This might be a day for you to write to yourself: “Hang in there, take 10 deep breaths, read something funny and hit the ground running…you’ll survive in style, like you always do!”

By writing these “love notes” ahead of time, you’ll find it nurturing and extremely powerful. I did this for myself before I was about to endure something very daunting yet necessary and a week after I wrote them, I read them honestly forgetting what I had written. It was just what I needed to push me through and it warmed my heart to know that I wrote them…to me, from me! We know it’s wonderful to have those coaches and mentors, but when the positive encouragement comes from within, that in itself cannot be matched.

Monday Mojo: If only I was there a little earlier…

I had to get my car serviced recently and I always make sure I get it dropped off first thing in the morning – typically by 7 or 7:30am – I want to beat the rush.  However, it was one of those crazy mornings and I couldn’t get there until close to 8am, and it was like I was dropping my car off in the middle of a blue light special.  When I drop my car off between 7 and 7:30, there is no one there. I zip in and out in a few minutes, but when I was there at 8am there was a line fifteen cars deep.  As I sat in my car anxiously for thirty minutes waiting for the next service representative to show up I chuckled to myself thinking this will be a great MOJO.

Simply it’s more crowded when you do what everyone else is doing. You’ll find the lines are longer, what you’re doing takes longer, there’s more demand for the same thing so you get less, it’s more stressful, you are not in control, and so on.

Isn’t that how everything in life is?  If we choose to follow the pack (and be normal) there’s less to go around because there are more people. When you push yourself to be slightly ahead of the pack, there typically is the same amount, or more, of what you want with a lot less people going for it.  So not only is it easier to get what you want, but it’s also stress free.

In observation of both types of people – I’ve found there is only a slight difference in the habits of the ‘normal’ and the ‘ahead of the masses’ personality. So often we think in order to get what we want in life we have to make a radical transformation. Yet in reality, just being slightly more disciplined and pushing-it a little more will put you ‘ahead of the masses’.

If I had dropped my car off at 7:30am, I would have been out of there and on my way five minutes later. Arriving only thirty minutes later, at 8am (with the normal crowd), what should have taken five minutes, took nearly an hour. By the time I finally got out of there it was 8:50am. Not only did it cost me more time, but for the rest of the day I was late and scrambling for my next appointment. The entire day I felt like I was behind the eight ball, it was exhausting.

Now here is the scary part. If you are one of those who are chronically late for everything – think about what you’re getting. Life’s leftovers – the stuff no one else wanted. So begin by being on time, and then focus on being a little early and being a little more disciplined. Being a little bit ahead of the crowd will get you way ahead in the end.

Think about the people who may have what you want in your life. They may have a lot more, but do they really do that much more than you?  Usually not, usually they simply know how to stay slightly ahead of the masses.

Life is crowded and tough in the middle. Life sucks in the bottom 25%, and is magical in the top 25%. Commit to being in the top 25%!

Make it a powerful and successful week!

Remodel Your Body

I wrote this wellness tip about a year ago, but recently, I have come up with situations which reminded me of when I was inspired to write this so I wanted to share it again!

The other day as I was listening to the radio, there was a commercial about using your line of credit for home improvements.  Being involved with the Real Estate and Lending industry I though: that’s a great idea.  However, what really intrigued me was the concept of  how easily we embrace the idea of “fixing up our homes, cars and yards” because we have the equity to invest in our “objects” or something which will give us value.

What I mean by this, is, let’s say you have a leaky roof – you’d patch it, right?  Or, you have a sink and toilet which is leaking – you’d fix it, right?  How about a flat tire or an engine overhaul – you’d deal with it, right?  Imagine if you saw the leaky roof, toilet, flat tires, blown engine and just decided to “deal with it another day” (when it’s the “right time”).  Most likely you wouldn’t do that, because your cars and your home(s) are objects in which you have invested.   You wouldn’t wait for the roof to collapse or the car to blow up; you would find a way to keep your investments running smoothly.

Why then, when we ARE our bodies and live with our bodies every moment of our life we don’t deal with the “leaks”, the “flat tires”, “blown engines”, etc.  We put it off to the next week, month or year.  It’s something that apparently we don’t value as much as we do our vehicles (which eventually get used for scrap metal)!  If we could put the value into ourselves and find proactive ways to fix our little warning signs, we would help our bodies appreciate…not depreciate!

Some of these warning signs would be:

  • Fatigue
  • Lack of sleep
  • Lack of strength
  • Weight gain
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Osteopenia (precursor to Osteoporosis)
  • Stress
  • Weight loss (severe)
  • Back aches

These are just a few warning signs that our bodies need a remodel or at least a minor investment!  Think about this the next time you will run out and buy a new faucet, but won’t go to a workout because it “can wait”.    It really can’t wait…and you won’t know this until your house “collapses”.

I work with some of the busiest men and women around and they find the time to “invest” in their health.  Literally, these individuals have grown younger by creating this investment as a priority!  Give this some thought, you can’t afford NOT to!
